I found a haunter's goldmine, and it's at my job. I'm a horticulturist at a state college, and recently I was transferred to the performing arts center. They have a 40 foot dumpster where they dump their stuff, and at the end of a play's run, they usually just scrap most or all of the materials.
Last week I talked to the guy in charge of the props construction department, and asked if it was okay to do some 'dumpster diving'. Not only did he say yes, he also invited me to rummage through his "odds-and-ends" bins if I needed something in particular.
Last week I found several half-full boxes of finishing nails, drywall screws, and wood screws, and just today I found about a dozen 8' 1x4s, 2 dozen brand new 3' x 3' pieces of burlap, and a used piece of heavy black cloth 4 feet wide and about 22 feet long (as well as some smaller pieces).
It's like every day is Halloween and Christmas combined.

Building has really dropped off in my area but when it busy these contractors throw everything away!!! I could go to job site dumpsters and build a house with what these guys throw out. I was on a job site and a truck hit a box of screws ripped the corner of the box open and out to the dumpster it went.... I was like what you doing with that? trash its ripped open.... like it was food I told the guy here put it in my truck.. Done 6,000 screws free for me! so a short story long is I LOVE DUMPSTER DIVING TOO!!!!

I feel like we here at HF have taken "dumpster diving" to a new art form:

    I call it "Curbside Connoisseur-ing"

Seriously awesome resource you have there Pumpkinhead625. Guard it Well.

In a dumpster close to my place I was looking through it along with an elderly man who had been doing such "diving" for many years.
Then we heard a male voice screaming"Garbage Pickers! Garbage Pickers!"
We looked around? About two blocks away from behind a screened window, on the third floor of the old hotel was where this voice eminated. (I hoped he didn't have scope rifle up there!)
I believe the person yelling at us was just jealous!
I have the "technology" to pull nails from a piece of wood! I also have the technolgy to saw the bad end off of a board. (Yes this makes it shorter, but I also know how to use shorter boards!)
Can anyone believe I can be So smart AND ambitious?
"Pull that nail, cut that board!"
    Wow! Impressive, huh?

Sweet resource. They will probably also throw out old sets (backgrounds, scenes) too. Exciting!
