So, I'm an odd sort of traditionalist when it comes to pumpkins, I always, ALWAYS (!!) have fresh pumpkins, carve them with faces, light them with Candles. The whole traditional lot.
Except, I anthropomorphize mine. I always name them, and give them a purpose and a personality. These two:
Beautiful Halloween Blog Photo, Grim Gourd Brothers
Are Greeter and Guardian. One is the Greeter of children, he kept an eye on my doorstep. The other was the house Guardian, and lent a sarcastic look at people getting seconds or thirds. They are brothers, nick named the Grim Gourd Brothers.
Call me crazy, but I sort of feel that it's part of the artistic nature of the holiday, and to not do so would be really empty and it's just carving a face or picture in to a culinary vegetable.
Then again, I have a touch of the crazy, so I'm curious to see if anyone else on this forum does the same, or if Jack O' Lanterns are just Decor and nothing more.
So? Do you name your pumpkins? Give them personalities? Anybody?

Images of Halloween, projects for Halloween, and rants about Halloween, all year long. Halloween is Beautiful.

I try to keep it simple as well.

We went a little overboard last year. (this was only half...)

Considering I have tendonitis in my thumb that after about 2 pumpkins really starts killing me, I need to enlist more aid....

I always love carving them. And I agree with savagehunter...each carving some how comes alive with it's own spirit and personality for me to. I absolutely LOVE the smell of the pumpkin as we carve each one. Something I look forward to all year!!

I carve some from very basic to very artistic that have taken 5-6 hours to do.No i dont name them but yes they all have a part of me in each of them.
I actually feel remorse every year when i have to throw them out. It is like parting with a friend.

Yes, all of my pumpkins have personalities. I no longer have any real pumpkins in my haunt. I make all of mine out of paper mache or carved foam. Just about every prop in my haunt is based on a pumpkin. Once the prop has been built we try to name them based on the personality of the piece. We are starting to run out of names!

when i choose a pumpkin, it has to have the right personality. the right character, that is how i base what i'm going to carve. i guess i never name them though.

I do a little of all types of carving. Some with the pictures of haunted houses or graveyards. Some with plain triangle eyes, and toothy grin, and then some with personality. Little bit of everything Love your pumpkins, the names are really cute too!
