Hi everyone, I was wondering if any of my fellow haunters have tried holding DIY tombstone classes? Im a SAHM and like everyone I could use extra cash. So here is the question to the experts... (thats you)

    1) Do you think that people would come to such a class?

    2) How much do you think I should charge for a class or series of classes?
(Im in southern California if that helps)

Let me know what you think, my husband always tells me to go for it... I dont trust him... he sleeps with me LOL!

    Thanks, Pam

If you are known in your area well for you display or haunt, then I would have to say go for it. You could go into little tricks like how to make the fake moss using the sawdust and green paint method. You could teach how stuff naturally weathers using lots of visual aids of old tombstones, showing how it effects the details.

i say go for it too! and like biggie says, if you're known, all the better. around here they have people who go to the community college and the college puts out a book with craft opportunities. i have taken character fence post classes [a scarecrow and 3 pumpkins], made a decor fence, and made a wood easter bunny. the class was $10.00 and they supplied a list of the materials i needed to bring. it was a lot of fun.

A class like that might do well in the weeks leading up to Hallowe'en. That gives you plenty of time to set up an agenda, find a venue, advertise, etc.

Go for it. It is a great way to meet like minded people and learn from them as much as they learn from you. GO FOR IT!

I say go for it too!

The wealth of information & potential contacts for the future is awesome! Never know to what extent they will grow & become more.

Before doing any advertising for the classes... research all the costs associated (tools, & materials) with it. You don't want any surprises or missing anything before the first class. It'll take quite a bit of planning for the first class. But, if you continue... it should get easier as they go. Do consider what items the students should bring vs be supplied for them to complete the project. Tables, chairs, & a space to work in are immediate concerns. So is proper lighting, heating/ cooling, & ventilation, be provided. Also make a list of future projects & poll the class for future projects.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think Im gonna do it, I was thinking about June would be a good time to start and that way I have time to get everything together and advertise.

Everyone in my neighborhood always wants to know where I get my stuff from, and always want to learn when I tell them I made them. Last year we bought about 40lbs of candy, I gave out 2 pieces per TOT and all of it was gone in a couple of hours. I figure I had about 400 TOT's. People come from all over to TOT here... take pictures... get the crap scared out of themselfs LOL

Funny thing is I always seem to scare the adults more than the kiddies... go figure LOL

I think it is great that you want to share you knowledge. I know there was a time when a workshop or two would have been something I would have loved to have be able to take. Only after I did a lot of trial and error props did I learn that a home haunter that has an incredible yard display also does a workshop or two over the summer. Good luck on your venture.
