Hi all,
I just moved to a new area 2 1/2 months ago . And really didn`t know who decorated or how big they went with their decorations. Well today I started to make my paper mache pumpkins . When my sons friend came over and was watching me make them. And said well, you have some competition around here . And proceeded to tell me about a few houses that go all out decorating for halloween. I didn`t expect to get into a decorating contest with others around here for halloween . But I feel that I must prove I can do it big too. lol. I think I`m getting alittle ahead of myself because I haven`t even talked to others that decorate but just hearing about them , makes it a challenge to me.
Does this happen to others that decorate or am I the only one?

I have a competitive streak in me. I think I am harder on myself than I should be. I know the neighbors enjoy my display, but I always want to do bigger and better. I hate to admit it, but when a teenage kid comes up to me and says I have the best house in the neighborhood than it makes me feel really good. I do enjoy the holiday, but I think I get to enjoy it more after it is done and I can look back at all the hard work I put into it.

First it's never bad to be ahead or have a little competion.
Second, it's awesome that you live in such a cool neighbor hood. Most ones I visit people dont go all out. It would be nice for a change to see another house spookiefied" other than my own.
Third, making it a competion seems like it would be a ton of fun. It would surley the big night that much speacial. Plus you can connect with your neighbors more since you'd have something in common.
Fourth, you could even talk to your neighbors and try and plan one huge theme. That would be really cool. Could you imagine having the coolest block in town? Maybe make the 6:00 evening news? Town papers? Radio?
Fifth, proving your self is always good but this is Halloween. It's a night of fun & terror. The only people we really have to please are the trick or treaters.halloween is a super cool holiday.

just have fun. as long as you enjoy it what does it matter??? i have found that there will always be a house that NO ONE can beat, and there will Always be people who do not decorate at all.. so do your thing.. and if your heart is really in it your house will be the one all the kids love..

Thank you all for the replys. I have gotten so much from just these few posts. I think I will just have fun as so many have stated and enjoy the ppl wowing at my house. But I will try to get something together for the neighborhood to do as one. It really would be an ice breaker to get to know more ppl in the neighbor hood. And who knows maybe we will get on the news. Thanks again you all have been very helpful. Now lets ROCK HALLOWEEN! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I do it for myself, I could always try to one up the neighbors intentionally. However it isn't as fun when you go from wanting to, to needing to. Now I am not saying I don't always have something up my sleeve incase a neighbor pulls something out the night of. As long as I get my one good scare, or help a little kid get the guts to go up to the scary house. I am happy and will go talk to the other neighbors after the ToTs are done and congratulate them on a good show.

why the thumbs down on this thread...I'd love competition in my neighborhood...it makes you up your game. I can get by without adding a single new prop this year and still have the coolest house in the hood. I used to have competition but they all moved away. I think we all benefited from trying to up the ante...and the ToTs benefited too when there were four or five good haunts and not just one. Plus, more good haunts bring more ToTs..

Personally, I think that some competition is a good thing, as long as "winning" isn't the only thing that's important.
(some folks become obsessed with the concept of "best" and "winner" - compared to "improving" and "desire")
I'd like to point out that you haven't SEEN what the rest of the neighborhood puts out for Halloween either - to them, airblown's may be their idea of "good" decorations.
Then again, they might already be an average of $10,000 or more into their props, sets and decorations - pneumatics, prop controllers, and mazes being the norm.
I'm hoping they're somewhere in between.
For this year, just do what you want, and see where you fit in - if they're beyond your current skill level, then you have some people to lean on to learn something new!Hell is an eternity of getting up at 4am to nothing but decaf coffee...
2009 photos and 2008 photos ...uhmmm...and what I have evolving...
