I live in Erie, Colorado, a small town just north of Denver. Our local haunt buisiness is very influenced by farm style haunts, unlike the metro area. Two that come to mind are Frightmare in Westminster and Terror in the Corn right here in Erie. So, this year I am looking to theme my haunt on an old west town/ abandoned farm.
First off, I dont have a very creative name (The Terror). I want to have another name, my main idea being "Creep Acres."
This is how I have it themed out- 1. Facade of an old cabin. As you venture inside, table in the middle. Flickering candles. The table is set with a cobweb covered skelleton in the middle. Off to the side is a counter with a staticy TV, volume on low, but loud enough that you canstill hear it over the radio on top of it, which is blaring Hank Williams Sr. music to give a creepy and falsely happy music. 2. Open area, as you walk aroung corners, you pass a clown prop next to a box of dynamite. Then you come to the facade of the mine. 3. Mine, 4 by 8 building, pretty dark, winding hallways, 6 foofceiling, at the middle of the second part guests will trigger an air hose. 4. Open area, walk up to the insane asylum. 5. Insane Asylum, first room- office, second room- passage with old man that blows air out of his mouth at you, third room- machinary, table, fourth room- our version of a wind tunnell, using duct work, a leaf blower, and an oversized white sheet. There may be more, but the plans aren't done yet.

These are some great ideas, Pumpkin_King!

Is the mine going to be abandoned? You could put signs near the entrance of the haunt that say something like, "WARNING: Retired Mining Area" and such. There are a lot of reasons not to go in an abandoned mine: posionous gases, explosives, venomous animals, falling rocks etc. You could also put "warning" signs of those as well.

You could figure a way to fake the above dangers. If you work hard enough, you might be able to trick the hauntees into thinking it's a real mine!

Good luck, and be sure to post your progress.

Mr S. - The room that will become the mine next year was used this year, with the air nozzles. Only change is that they'll be going through bachwards from last year. Those are all good ideas. I'll see where I'm at budget wize come August, when I start the main construction. It will be a few months before I start work on much of anything other than planning. I'll keep you guys updated.
08- Would be great to check out you guys too. BTW we will probably be open the 29th, 30th, and 31st this year, so you can comeout on Friday and Saturday and focus on your own haunt on Sunday.
One more thing- The Terror Haunted House You can scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the little white link and fill out some information on what you'd like to see in the haunt this year. Or, if you want, look through the other pages and see what's on the web-page.
If you have any comments/ideas then just post them here. Thanks everyone.

I especially love the skeleton in front of the TV as you first walk in. What a great way to introduce the patrons to the setting of you haunt. Keep up the good work!

Hey Erie, Fort Collins here. Sounds like you have great ideas. I'll have to come check it out.

    Some Ideas:
    > You could recreate the "American Gothic" image using skeletons:

    > Tractors running over victims.
    > Bodies emerging up through the ground of a plowed field.
    > How about rows of corpse heads in the ground like pumpkins.
    > Gallows with a noose or two with a body dangling.

    Some names:
    > Sleepy Hollow, Foggy Hollow
    > Corpse Plantation
    > Wicked Ranch, Corpse Ranch
    > Blood Acres, Blood Creek

    Just some ideas.

looking at your ideas some things dont fit the theme, A clown near dynamite how does a clown fit in to your old west theme,as well as the insane assylym doesnt fit into your theme , if you are doing old west or farm type ideas may be a saloon atmosphere, instead of the insane asylym maybe somthing to do with scarlet fever or measel epidemic, hangings at the county jail . If you are trying to relate the atmosphere to that particular era it should portray those era type things otherwise your theme is lost ,although your ideas are great and the rooms are in place they should define your overall theme thats my thoughts

I had a reasonable sized display for many years. This year I decided to go big or go home!

I'm currently finishing up my laser vortex tunnel. My next step is to start fabricating stone walls for a castle/dungeon.
