Does anyone ever haunt for Charity? I was thinking about doing something like "Haunt for the Holidays" maybe just a can food donation or a coat drive. Or should Halloween night just be fun for the tot's? Anyway, I have a few people that think it's a great idea but not sure if stuff like this works well on Halloween.

Yes they work..
Some folks in my neighborhood did that a few years ago before they moved away. They made a walkthru haunt using their back yard and the Friday and Saturday before Halloween they opened it up and asked for a can of food donation for the entrance fee. They advertised in the neighborhood schools and of course the church, so they had a good turnout and that upped the number of ToTs who came back to the neighborhood on Halloween.
If you're going to do it, do it before Halloween and leave Halloween to trick or treating. I'm actually thinking of doing the same thing.

My vote is to have it just be fun for the tot's. Not sure how many toters would be carrying around a can of food or coat with them??

Good points and thank you. Halloween night will be a fun night. I plan on taking Halloween week off for my second vaction so if that goes well then we will open for a week before. I'll call around to the local papers and such to see if they can help us out with the advertizing. I figure 2010 is the real of change. Why not actually try something?

I started collecting canned food 2 years ago and have had a great response. Filling a coffin with food is my theme, last year I made a hearse to protect it all from the rain, worked really well, was overflowing by the end of the night.
I have no help from my newspaper, I just start the drive when I setup the cemetery. Word of mouth is my only advertisement.

I do charity haunts for March of Dimes and have for Relay for Life (breast cancer) and have always did very good. I have done walkthroughs, hay rides, wooded trails, etc. You have a good idea about newpapers, wouldn't hurt to advertise what you are needing. Loved the food in the coffin idea!!

You might be surprised. We had a canned food drive at our haunt last year - we just made sure that people knew about it, but it wasn't a requirement that you donate to get into the haunt. And you know what? We collected over 126 lbs of food! I was also concerned that no one would want to drag around food with kids and TOT buckets, but they did!
It doesn't hurt to advertise that you're collecting - what's the worst that could happen, no one donates anything? And that would be the same as not doing it, right?

I work at a charity haunt under our local Lions club. I am DEFINITELY going to pass on the idea of patrons bringing a can of food in lieu of a coupon for a discount.

We have been doing our haunted house as a charity event for St. Judes Children's Research Center. There are many organizations out there such as St. Judes that would be very appreciative.
We try to collect at least one dollar entrance fee.
This year, we raised $1200.

I usually get many of my neighbors involved and the entire community comes out.
