I always see in horror movies kids trick or treating during the days (Halloween being one). In all my life, here in Ottawa, I never seen kids go out but only after sun down. The earliest I seen is around six, after supper time.
Even this year, I got some kids around 6:00pm and I gave them the look
(you are a bit early, don't you think?). I would get pissed if kids rang the doorbell during the middle of the day, while we are busy setting everything for the night.
Do kids pass during the day with you? And if they do, doesn't it spoil it a bit, because things are so better looking at night?

We occasionally get some kids earlier in the day, around 5 p.m. or so; usually it's the younger ones, which is somewhat understandable. What I find more frustrating is when stragglers come when my mom and I are in the process of taking everything down, as happens, too. Usually, there won't be anyone visible down the street, so we think everyone's done, then here comes another car or van full of TOT's...

I've only ever seen tiny kids--like toddlers being carried-- out before dusk.

My neighborhood must be strange, then, because the majority of our ToTers - and we get lots - arrive before dusk.

I took my sons (ages 5 and 1) out about 6 pm. There were only a few other people out TOTing and 1 house that wasn't really ready I guess (but had their light on), and that was about 6:30. But is 6:00 really that early? Personally, I don't think it is. It was dusk and I felt it was perfectly appropriate. If they had their light on, we knocked on their door. Now, if it were 4:00 or something, then I can see being annoyed.

HMmama,
you're in the same time zone as me and close to the same latitude, so 6pm is dark enough for cars to need headlights. I think 5:30 would be a bit too light for most school age kids but about right for kids ages 5 and 1. A friend has his children's hour from 4:30 to 6:30 so little tykes can enjoy halloween at an appropriate level. At 6:30, he pulls the covers off the pg-13 to R [for violence] props and cranks the soundtrack. Not child friendly any more. Earlier than 4:00 is unacceptable unless a special arrangement has been made.

Our time was between 4 to 8pm. I of course honor this.

I don't get anyone until it is just about dusk and my kids head out at that time as well. Actually during the last 2 years the ToT's didn't start arriving until well after it was dark then it was steady until >8:30ish when just the older kids were left.
