OK, just wanted to make sure that the coffins is the project we are talking about. It depends on how big of a ground breaker coffin you want to make. If it's small enough to not block the view of a tombstone, then you might be able to just saw off the boards near the 2x4's. I was gonna do that this year, but ran out of time. If they are standard pallets (40x48) then you should be able to get about 18" of board length per piece. Remember, imperfect is better. Hence, you don't want the boards to be the same length, stagger them.

palletts are such a pain in the a#% to break up, but if you want free wood you have to feel the pain to get the gain.

There are two known methods.
One method involves multiple Kegs of Beer, High Schooler's or College Students that really shouldn't be disassembling pallets while under the influence, and FIRE.
Another method, done at the County compost facility involves a monster size chipper shredder, cow patties, lawn clippings, leaves, garden waste... and a special uric acid & nitrogen "compost starter" solution applied by the workers.
