Not only did I get the awesome certificate from the girl in my neighborhood, but I also just found out that a picture similar to this one won $20 in a Lomograhpy contest in Tokyo!!!!!!!!!!!
My sister's friend told me that he entered a picture that was very similar to this one in an online contest for a Tokyo Lomo contest and he won $20. So a picture from my haunt (and me) ended up in Asia!!!!!! So weird. But, I was really excited.

Yardhauntjunkie,
Congrats!!! I fully understand the work that everyone here puts into a relative short period of satisfaction. I set my haunt up acouple different times. This year I (and friends) set it up at my brothers house. My brother lives in town so there was quite a bit of action. Several comments could be over heard throughout the night but the one that made it all worth it was "Man this is cool! We have got to come back here next year!" People who don't haunt (I have several friends who don't) don't understand that this is all it takes to charge us up. This is why we are thinking of halloween on November 1st! Great Job!!

I am, of course, very happy that your work was acknowledged. Not to take away from that by ANY means, I am also happy the girl understands how important giving acknowledgement is--and it's amazing she's only 11 and "gets" this better than most adults! That is kindness, and that is one child to be proud of!
I like to reward TOTs who put extra effort into their costumes by giving out a blue ribbon that says "Best Costume". It doesn't matter that I give out 5 to 10 of them, or that it's homemade (I cut 6 inches of ribbon off a roll, cut a V into the end, and use fabric paint -the kind that puffs up, from JoAnns or other fabric/crafts stores- to write the words on it. Even a thin-tip permanent marker would work.) The ribbons don't look the best, but it's more important the work on the costume is recognised. If 2 kids come together and 1 has put effort but the other hasn't , I just hand it silently with the candy and maybe they dont even see it til later, it doesn't matter.
anyway, I just happy about your whole situation with the certificate!

Ok I am just seeing this thread now but it couldnt have come at a better time. I was considering not doing the haunt we do this year. ITs a lot of work and Im not sure I want to do it this year. However we are the only house in the neighborhood that does anything like this for Halloween and everyone has come to expect it. Each year the kids start to ask me "Hey lady are you going to do that haunted house again this year?" After reading your post maybe I will reconsider. As for you....you should make a sign for your yard next year or the next time you do your haunt that states "2009 Scariest house winner"
Thanks for sharing this story I loved it!!!
Linus: You've heard about fury and a woman scorned?
Charlie Brown: Yes, I guess I have.
Linus: Well that is nothing compared to the fury of a woman who has been cheated out of tricks or treats!
