Why do you think Halloween has sucked the last few years?

Halloween has seen better days, for sure. Although it's not dead, i have noticed a steady decline in interest in the Holiday. What reasons, if any, do you think are contributing to this? culture? population? full moon?weather? Post your thoughts here and any other comments you feel on making regarding this......i'm curious to know.

I think its just how rotten the economy is..whatever country messes up first ends up affecting the entire globe sooner or later..around here as we cruised the streets heading to the many events there were costumes all over so the popularity here in Canada is getting better or at least back into it, however I will say when I was a kid for some reason I thought there were a lot more trick or treaters than..I think times change and people are more cautious..before you could be out until 11pm (if people would still give you candy) and it was all good..

But I believe it's the economy (numbers here in Canada actually increased from last year in terms of Halloween sales) and people are being cautious and watching their spendings..

I have not seen a low in Halloween around here but I do live one block for the school and there are a lot of familys around my area.

    As for the economy....

One thing I did see this year is more home made costumes

I think you are taking your local perceptions and thinking it applies to the usa/canada as a whole. Retailers offered less halloween merchendise because of the economy but as a trend halloween is growing. Its in fact the second largest consumer holiday. (Can you guess #1)?

What I find interesting is that when I was a kid halloween was largely a kids holiday. Now its as much an adult holiday as anything.

This makes complete sense to me. We loved it so much as children that now, as adults, we want to get some of that magic back. So now we're haunters!

I believe its the economy, over protective parents and it always has been looked at as a 'bad' holiday as well and I live in a heavily mixed area of different religions so other religions put pressure on the media so you really have to watch what you do or say.

But I choose to fight fire with fire...although the numbers of TOTs is going down every year in my area, I make my yard bigger and better every year. They are in for a suprise next year!!!

I think you have to define what aspect of Halloween in sucking. ToT sucked at my house this year. I think it is due to so many more groups, whether church or civic, are having organized events. The pro haunted houses have been fab and when I visited them...the last weekend in September - there were already loads of people attending. I politely disagree with you that Halloween is declining. I think that regional events and issues can make it appear to wane in certain capacities - but it is definately still here in full force.

I sure hope your right, I live in a nice suburban neighbor hood with plenty of kids and I didnt even go through 1 bowl of candy. I had kids scream and run away, I had kids run to my house...still very slow. I live in a area with ALOT of Jewish and Jehovah Witness' and neither celebrate. If you go to a store, you wont ever hear Happy Halloween of Merry X-mas because it appearntly 'offends them. There has been big stinks about it in the press here over the years.

Halloween is fun and people need to realize that..I hope that isn't the reason for less and less trick or treaters (fuss over the holiday and so forth)..I remember as a kid the streets were packed..we need that again..the ones who have that still we all envy you of course..
