I'm a land surveyor and I had to do a survey of an old cemetery in the middle of nowhere today. I use a one man instrument so I'm all alone in a cemetery surrounded by woods on 2 sides and a farm field on another. All I kept thinking of is Halloween is 3 days away and look where I am.

    It was so dang creepy.

Most of the graves were from the 1800's with a few newer ones and many were broken. Some of the broken ones were just laying near the footer and some were fixed back together. And there was a trail the lead out of the cemetery into the woods. I don't know what that was about but I was NOT going to find out.

What a way to get into the spirit. Now I really can't wait! I wish I could've gotten more pics but here ya go -

That's a great pic and a great story. I'm seeing the opening scene of Night of the Living Dead where the zombie comes shambling through the cemetery and attacks the unwitting surveyor...er..I mean...couple!

I love old cemeteries! To me, there is nothing scary about them, though. I just find them beautiful and very peaceful. I also love history and cemeteries are some of the best places to learn about a community's history. But I have to admit, I would have been very tempted to see where that trail went!

Wow what a great job you had! Get any messages from the dead while there?

I would have loved it. One of my favorite things to do is go and photograph old cemeteries.

I had a couple different thoughts while I was there....

    1) that's a great looking tombstone, I'm gonna have to make one like it for my cemetery.
    2) which way am I going to run if a zombie pops out of his grave

It was fascinating and eerie at the same time. A great experience I'll never forget

    Happy Halloweeeeeeen! (tomorrow)

As someone who has had to search and search for every bit of ancestry on one side that I could find, I surely appreciate people who have gone out and written down tombstone inscriptions and put them online. My grandmothers mother died when my grandmother was just 4 and I was thrilled to find her tombstone picture online one day.
