OK, one thing that annoys me is when I get trick or treaters that aren't wearing a costume. If they are poor, they could at least make an effort with what they have in the house. Sometimes I just want to tell them to go away and come back with a costume.

No costume = no treat (unless it is an accopanying and embaressed teen who'd rather be doing anything but look after their kid siblings).
No joke/song/story/dance = no treat (they have to do something to earn their treat in Scotland)
Those are my rules and I stand by them. Never had an issue yet.

In my opinion, yes, it would be wrong to tell them to go away and come back with a costume. It also could set you up to get your house egged or tp'd later that night! And it certainly won't help you win any popularity contests.
I say, in the spirit of the holiday, joke with them about their "creative" costume and give them the same treat as all the others. Just roll with it. Life's too short to get annoyed over someone else's lack of costume.Dear Sweet Leota, Beloved By All. In Regions Beyond Now But Having a Ball...

Or worse than eggs and TP , end up with cords cut etc! But that isn't why I give the candy, some kids might have to sneak out of the house to go if their parents are against celebrating. What the heck, it's just candy.

I never turn anyone away, costume or no costume. However I do keep a small supply of old masks, wigs and makeup etc on hand to give out to the older kids who don't wear costumes. That way they can trick or treat at other houses without fear of being turned away for no costume.

This question or similar comes up every year, sometimes several times a season... I have a long rant about it, but don't feel like looking for it or typing it out so you're getting the condensed version.

I would never punish a TOT for not having a costume. I want them to enjoy and love Halloween - not hate it and feel like it's stupid and adults are jerks.
Halloween is about being a kid, running around the neighborhood and getting silly and having fun... why would you want to impose a punishment on a kid for not having a costume especially since you don't know why they don't have a costume - no imagination, poor, parents/friends peer pressure to NOT dress up... they are KIDS!
Don't care how old they are, costume or not, if they come to my house they get candy.

Yeah I had some older "children" with just paper bags. I told them you best put holes in those bags and wear it over your head if you think your getting candy around here and sent them away empty handed.
In retaliation I would think that if these tweens can afford to waste toilet paper and eggs they could afford a 1 dollar make up kit from walmart and in the least blacken their eyes. Then I would give them an A for effort.
Don't get me wrong these weren't poor children. A couple looked like they were close to needing their first shave. What doesn't kill you can still make you walk funny.

You should keep a stock of older clothes you don't wear anymore and give it to those without costumes and make up costumes for them. You can design the lazy in the neighbourhood

BINGO! My sentiments exactly, Frankie's Girl.
I think that often times, adults can forget that trick or treating is not about US and the hard work we put in on our displays; it's about KIDS having fun and making memories on our favorite night of the year! They can end up with great memories or not so great memories - which would we rather be a part of?Dear Sweet Leota, Beloved By All. In Regions Beyond Now But Having a Ball...

Wow, now that's awesome of you. I wish I had a stash of supplies to give out. I hope nobody gets me wrong. There is NO WAY I would send them away empty handed. It's just a thought that is in the back of my head. After all, I'm told I have the best house in the neighborhood. It's all about them, not me.
