Thread: Need help with Coffin scene ideas!

Im going to have a new scene outside in my yard haunt. My Monster in a Coffin (MIC) is going to be the focal point in between 2 other Coffins with 2 actors in them. So my plan is to have the MIC laying flat on a couple saw horses (covered with a black sheet or something) And the other 2 coffins standing up vertically, 1 on each side of the MIC, with the actors in them. I'm looking for some sort of "background" ideas to put in with the scene or surround the coffins with. I just think it would look kind of empty or boring having 3 coffins in the yard by themselves. I already have a graveyard scene and don't want to put it in that scene, it will actually be at the end of the yard haunt walk thru with the MIC being the finale' and then the actors walking out out of the other 2 coffins at the end of the MIC routine. Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

you could make it a funeral scene, complete with mourning skeletons. Throw a black veil on some skellies or maybe a tissue in one of their hands. Put a creepy picture of the deceased up on an easel and toss some dead flowers around.

or you could make it into a crypt-type setup where there are some nice scene setters or stone walls around the scene. throw in some rats and snakes on the floor, maybe some random scattered bones and skulls.

it could also be a coffin-maker's workshop. put a half finished coffin and some planks lying around. maybe have the coffin maker accidentally sawing his hand off. A sign that says something like "Tom Stone's Coffins - Special today, buy one get one free" or whatever you want it to say.

could also be a vampire's lair. not sure what would work in that scenario. maybe a bat hanging down or a skeleton lying in front of it with a stake in his hand and a hammer in the other.

Not sure if this will help yah at all but I built a coffin last year with my neighbor for out shared haunted walk. We took an old fan, pulled off all the blades and replaced them with zip ties. Attached it to the interior of the coffin and wam-- fake " get me out of here" scratching on the lid. Sounds good and was a cheep effect even from a distance.

That IS an awesome idea, but my MIC is the DMX controlled scare so I don't need anything really for the coffins themselves, but thank you anyways. Im looking for more of stuff around the coffin to fill the scene and use as a back drop or background. But thanks again! awesome idea!

I bought a real lantern.. sprayed it with some black spray paint to make it look aged and smoked. I set it by the coffin and stick my shovel in the ground. I buy 3-4 bags of topsoil and pile it up around my coffin... like a fresh dug grave. Just use tiki torch fluid for fuel and set the flame REAL low...man it looks cool...
I dont have a pic of my last setup..just an old one when i was trying stuff out.

BTW..the mask in the back would go back n forth peeking out from behind the stone. It looked sooo cool. It was our Xmas polar bear with a mask on it and a black sheet. (My wife was not happy!) LOL

can you throw up some temporary walls behind the coffins and staple Scene setters to them? Also coffins look better with spider webs stretched all over them. Or you can back light the scene with some red flood lamps or strobes.

A wake/viewing scene is where I'd go with it. Get some of the little wire easels at a craft store (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc) and throw together some quick wreaths (grapevine wreath, a few cheap floral bushes, ribbons, wirecutters, hotglue) to go on them. Drape a wide ribbon across the wreath with "father" or "mother" or whatever relationship the deceased has to the mourners. Call a florist in your area and see if they'll save some wilty flowers for you instead of throwing them out. Hang and dry them for creepy dead bouquets. A couple of mourners would be cool--buckies, bluckies, PVC frame people, whatever you could throw together. These next few ideas are admittedly over the top, but I'm just brainstorming Floor lamps like one sees in funeral homes, whether functional or not... A backlit "stained glass" window behind the coffins... (frame of 1"x2" with butcher paper over it, pattern painted or drawn on butcher paper with markers, white ropelight around the inside edge of the frame). Dadgummit. Like I need any new projects to even consider...
