Thread: Turning a carport into a haunt

I'm planning on turning our carport into a small haunt room. Since I'm working with an extremely small budget and dimensions I'm trying to find a way to get the best look with out going completely broke. For the walls I'm thinking about stretching sheets from the roof of the carport and weigh them down at the ground to hide the ugly walls of the carport.

Here's two of my ideas for the room. I'm still at a toss up about which one to do.

The left design is for a cursed doll's play room. I have almost all the props I'd need for this room. At the back a painting hangs of a sinister looking girl holding a doll. And beneath it sits a small table, with a little chair and a doll that looks a lot like the girl in the painting.

~The story behind the painting is that the girl belonged to a wealthy family, and was alway given anything and everything she wanted. She became selfish and greedy, being rude and essentially turned into a rotten child. The artist who painted the portrait of the girl and her newest doll knew of the girl's rotten personality and bespelled her, causing her to switch places with the doll she held the night the painting was finished. She became trapped in the form of a small doll. While the doll became life sized, she was still tied to the girl and could not leave her side. The family had disappeared the same evening the girl turned to a doll, as a part of the spell. She would have no one to help her. The house was left exactly the way it was, rumors spreading that anyone who entered would surely be cursed. Every now and again you can hear a girl speaking to someone, and eerie music play but there are no living people in the house. ~

It's kinda cheesey but I'm not a writer at all.

The room will have a table with a collection of porcelain dolls covered in spider webs and bugs. A large spider lives in the upper corner of the room. There is a tiny table with a small tea set that is old and covered in dust. The bottom of the cups are stained as if someone had a tea party but was never able to clean up.

The costume I'd be handing out candy to the TOTs is the doll that switched places with the girl.

The other idea is a twisted Mad Hatter Tea party. The room would become a narrow dining room, featuring a long table with a collection of tea cups, different tea pots, saucers everything is old and spoiled. Dusty chairs will line the table and along the walls are 5 paintings. To the left is a painting of the March hair and the cheshire cat. On the right side is a painting of the catepillar and the white rabbit. And at the back wall is a larger painting of the Queen of hearts holding an axe. The queen of hearts is going to be peering out of the painting almost poping out of it.

The costume for this one is a take on the Mad Hatter. Or mad hattress in my case.

If I went with the Tea Party theme I would have to make the 5 painting, and collect a couple more tea sets. And I still need to get how I'm going to put the walls up together (not sure if sheets are the best way to go). I was hoping to have walls I could paint but I haven't figured out a way put together walls that would move easily.

So there's my ideas. What do you guys think? If you have any idea which one would be better put up or tips with the set up pleeeaase let me know. I'm still a newbie with creating haunts.

hhmm, personally, I like the doll scenario better. You have a good imagination, not to mention very talented artist!! Very impressed!! You're story line you have there, is just perfect!

If I went with the doll room I would definatley have less work to do. I'd just have to work on the costume a bit more. But I have most of the props already. I'm going to be posting pics as I gather everything together.

You can check out the thread I made (in my signature below) that chronicles the construction of my Haunt this year, but what would probably be of more interest to you would be the shots of my haunt in the past years. I did those mainly on the cheap, and it really is amazing the effects you can get when you don't spend much money.

Oh Wow! The haunt your working on this year is amazing! And I love the idea of dressing in disguise with candy in hand to spook ToTs. Thank you for putting up the link.

It's relatively easy to put together a haunt for not a lot of scratch. I love to go to places like Goodwill and Value Village for props. I'm not a big fan of store bought Halloween props. In fact, I just went up to JoAnn fabrics in search of something that I could use for drapes in my haunt. In the end, I just couldn't get myself to buy something new. I ended up going down the street to the Goodwill there and I found a really good queen size sheet that will work. The sheet cost me $3.99, whereas the fabric at JoAnn would have cost me at least $15.00.

I mean, I'm just going to beat the hell out of it, so why use something nice?

We use our carport for part of our haunt as well. Last year I found old velvet curtains to hang up behind our organ to create a theater effect. We've also used black plastic. You can also buy light colored curtains at a second hand store and paint them. Here is a pic of a curtain a friend of ours painted to close off the the entrance. We dont use this anymore as we have a facade now. But it will give you an idea of how you can paint curtains.

Lots of black plastic for relatively cheap....in the paint section of Wal-Mart, there are black plastic drop cloths.
I'm partial to the doll scene. For some reason, dolls scare the crap out of people. I'd put a few possessed looking dolls laying around in there too. Thrift stores have a lot of those old plastic baby dolls You can color their eyes red with a sharpie.

I like the doll scene as well. Keep us updated.
