I used to live in an 18-floor apartment building so there were a lot of apartments to TOT to. There was this one apartment at the end of a hall and the door was ajar. It was pitch dark inside. My friend and I (we were 8 or 9) peeked in and out jumped this guy dressed as the Incredible Hulk. We both fell backwards and he started to laugh at us. He was funny because he had glasses on too.

(I sometimes now dress up scarily for the TOT'ers but I have to be careful because I have a couple of stairs in front of our house so I don't want kids to fall backwards on them)

I don't have too many since my parents went uber religious during this period of my life

My first though was very tramatic. We went out trick or treating... I have no clue what I was dressed up as but I had a big paper bag full of candy. Apparently I was dragging it along the ground after a rough night and the bag got wet... well the candy made a break for it and I made it home with a big bag full of nothing.

My most vivid memory of childhood ToTing was my neighbor's popcorn balls. I'd run to their house, get the ball, and go right home and eat it before I would do the rest of my ToTing.
    Ahhh, the memories.

That's great! Kids get alot from adults that are able to enjoy things like that.

I grew up in a typical suburb, sprawling out forever, so as a kid we trick or treated all night long! Our house wasn't over the top with decor, just die cuts in the windows, but when I was older I put a horror sounds sound track on a tape deck in the garage, our house was the only one with that!
I remember the build up to halloween just as fondly as the trick or treating. The halloween specials, even the commercials that played weeks before were exciting. Going to Kmart and Walgreens to get costume stuff.
I will always be a kid when it comes to Halloween!

Not sure when you guys were born, but I grew up in the '70s, and I remember the costumes in Woolworth's that would come in those small boxes with a mask with rubberband in the back and some cheap plastic outfit with the costume drawn on the front of it.

I used to have a blast trick or treating, but I remember my last Halloween when this girl told me I was too old and refused to give me any candy. That scarred me for life! I told her that 35is not that old! LOL

    No seriously I was 12 or 13, I don't remember exactly.

But were you at least dressed in a costume? We sometimes get a group of 12 or 13-year-olds who just come by wearing black t-shirts and black jeans and I don't really want to give them the candy because I feel like they're not putting in some effort.

    Same here...I'm 46

Yeah, my best memories were of going to the local VFD bobbing for apples & going through ''Old School'' haunted houses and as you mentioned...the old Roses & Woolworth costumes.
The old wax candy such as the bottles & blow pipes come to mind quite a bit also.

I drift back in time all the time...it's good for the mind to dream & think back on such days.

Funny you mention those old wax candy bottles. I put in an order for them on Oriental Trading. Never knew what the deal was with the wax though - did you chew on them and spit them out? Same with the red wax lips.

Yes I was in a costume, I wouldn't have went without it. I do agree that kids without costumes take the fun out of it.
