No Stephen King or vampire/murder gore fests... but good old fashioned 'figure out why the house is haunted' type mysteries.
Any suggestions?

Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill is a pretty good ghost story. Not sure if it's up your alley or not but you might wanna check it out. I should warn you he is the son of Stephen King.
You'll have money and all that money can buy.

Thanks. I like the beginnings of Stephen King stories- but too many times his endings are "things blowed up real good."

Both good and old-fashioned, not to mention proto-Lovecraftian:
The Haunted and the Haunters, by Edward Bulwer-Lytton
By an author who went down with the Titanic:
Mystery of the Flaming Phantom, by Jacques Futrelle

More more more! I LOVED Heart Shaped Box by the way, and Joe Hill also has a book of short stories (That one I got autographed!) that is excellent, called 20th Century Ghosts.
I gotta say, Hell House is one of the scariest books I've ever read, it's right up there with The Exorcist and Amityvill Horror to me. OOOOOOhhhhhh! Here's a good one, if you can find it, it's called Julian's House, one of my all time FAVORITE books, and scary as all get out. Ghost scary, not gore scary.I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's. His hair was perfect.
~~~Pssssst~~~It's me, Geekmidwinter, I just changed my screen name and avatar! ^v^ ^v^ ^v^
