So, what's the general consensus on eating really old halloween candy.

Now see, i'm a health conscious person, i wouldn't eat something in my fridge that was past it's use by date.

However, me and a friend (thatguycraig - i just got him to join the forums recently) are drawing up halloween plans for this years haunt, and we stumbled across a bag of supplies i'd bought in NJ 3 halloween's ago.

Big bags of miniatures, bags of candy corn, everything that would make a TOT'ers night!

I totally forgot i had this stuff, and it's now 3 years old, but i'm not gonna lie, we started tucking in.

    Safe? Maybe not?

    Fun, hell yeah.

Anyone else disregarded the normal food rules when it comes to halloween candy?

Old chocolate is pure yuck! I'd say toss it unless you're decorating a gingerbread house with it... or using it for non-edible purposes.

If you won't dare eat it yourself, you may as well chuck it in the circular file.

Here's a pic of what we found

And to be honest jade it tastes just the same as it does the day you buy it.

Maybe it's cause they're all air tight sealed still.

any hard candy will last for YEARS and be ok... See Chiclets as an example of that! (I actually found some that were I kid you not 5 years old a couple weeks ago, and had someone "test" them, and they said they tasted like chiclets!).... I think if Chocolate is sealed and kept in a cool dry place it'll be ok for 2-3 years before going bad... once it hits the air though, you better plan on eating it.... Most candy has preservatives in it, and unless you found raisins, I think you may be ok in your candy find!

PS... I think there is someone on the forum who is craving some candy corn, so if you still have that, you might want to share that with them!!!
How many days do I have left?

The max that I've seen is one year (shelf life). Because you are giving it to kids, the safest bet is to buy fresh. Kids don't have a fully developed immune system yet and it would be harder for their systems to fend off bad candy.

Im sure the fruit items are fine. As far as the chocolate...does it look ok or does it have a white exterior...? A sure sign its old and I may pass in eating it. Anyway...hopefully the stores will be stocking their shelves with fresh candy soon!!

i say toss the chocolate. its made with milk so it probably doesnt have that long of a life span. but twizzlers ( unless it tastes like wax) and hard candy should be fine since its pure sugar.

I have a degree in food science.... Technically I think it's safe but I wouldn't give it to kids. The chocolates will have some visual or teaste changes. The gummies should be okay though.

Oh god i'd never give it out to the kids this year, that'd be wrong is every which way.

I'll leave it to me and my friend, if we get sick, it's our own faults that way, not hurting anyone else.

But no it all seems fine. Not white in the slightest. As i say they all had the original air-tight seal.

And the twizzlers, they day just as glorious as the day they were made
