I've tried a bunch of things but nothing is consistent.

I've got one of those dropdown spiders over the door and I want it to go off when I open the door or right before. I can't find any sound that penetrates reliably every time.

    Any ideas would be appreciated!

What about a bell hung over the inside of the door? So that when you open it it sounds off.

Thats a great idea. I'll have to check and see if will drop to a bell.

We have a screaming skull that is activated by motion. I added lights in it's eyes and nose and hooked it up to an external speaker. When the kids come to the door we hit a micro switch which lights the eyes and that sets off the scream. So your goal is to control a sound source remotely. If I were you I would get a cheap set of kids walkie talkies. Set one near the spider and scream into the other one before you open the door. Not only will the spider drop, but the scream can only help the effect. A baby monitor could work as well.

    Success!!!

Thanks to you guys, I started to think about a sound outside that could be triggered from inside.

I came up with an idea. Buy a mini external speaker for my IPOD mini and with an extention audio cable, I could hang it just outside the door inches from the spider underneath some Halloween lights so it can't readily be seen.

After testing about 50 different sound effects, I FINALLY found one that worked and used a WAV editing format program to amplify the volume then just put in repeat! Not that it needs it but I just finished testing it and it works beautifully! I just hit play on my IPOD inside the house and the speaker outside does the rest!

Great solution. This is a great way to activate sound response devices without spending a ton of money on controllers and sensors.
