Hi i I am new here and this is my first post. I have been doing hayrides for 3 years now and we get to create our own scenes.
We are extremely low budget and have made all of our props for under $100 dollars every year.
This year we have a scene that is very tough to work with. The way the tractor goes is in a figure 8 and around the first turn it comes up to a hill. The whole scene is like a 5 foot hill that then flattens on the top. There is very little flat space to put props close to the tractor. The only real place to put props is on top of the hill. The problem is that we cant get close enough to the tractor to have the element of surprise/shock.
I have 2 other people to work with and 2 weeks to make a scene with practically no money. We have 3 other scenes that we had to get things for.
on the other scenes we are re-creating the "SAW" bathroom, we are doing a "Hostile" scene and a crime scene. other scenes around the woods are Michael Myers, Pirates, Jail scene and many others. i just need one idea to bring this scene alive.

One thought i had about this scene is to fire a goose cannon in the middle of the dark. People are only expecting things to happen when scenes come up. To fire a goose cannon and have people jumping out would be cool plus it has all the elements for the initial shock...especially because you cant see anything.

how about a bunch of scarecrows, with a few real actors in there. If you have enough, they won t know which ones are real. maybe have a decoy actor they can see right away and the focus will be on that actor, then the scarecrow actors that have been hiding in plain sight will jump down at the last minute.
( I hope I explained myself clearly, It is almost 2a.m.!)Obsessed

haha....yes you did explain yourself. The problem with that is that for the past three years we have done that kind of thing. We put up like 25 crosses and strung dummies up and the people wore faceless masks. when the tractor went by we all went off of the crosses on both sides of the trailor. Thanks for the idea though.
im going out there tomorrow and hopefully i will take a pic of the scene to show what im talking about

Have a shack, a woman (or man) comes out screaming for help. Leatherface pops out, drags them bakc inside "kills" them the takes off after the tractor with chainsaw roaring.

another great idea...the only problem is that we have a chainsaw already, believe me leatherface was a serious idea in this. We feel that two chainsaws will be to much

my wife and I have been invited to work and scene in a hay ride.
we are thinking of going with her as a vampiress, and me as a caged werewolf, she will release me from the cage so I can attack the wagon.

How about passing a Giant Spider web and have actors in black spider costumes that start moving toward the ride. Have spiders and victim sacks hanging from tree branches and maybe a live victim screaming as the spiders are attacking (maybe half covered in a spider sack).

Do you have any grave yard/ zombie scenes? I was thinking you could do tombstones up on the hill top and flat part, and the zombies could attack the tractor/trailer from the other side as the guests are distracted by the graveyard. If digging is ok you could dig a couple of shallow graves and hide actors in them to jump out at the crowd. use big old burlap or brown blankets to cover up with in the graves.
