Thread: What was your best/worst costume as a kid?

When I was a kid I only got homemade costumes. Not those cool confections of fabric and trim that I make every year for my family. No, I got the ones that were sort of put together the night before out of stuff around the house. One year my mom dressed me up as a witch (how original right?) well anyway I wanted my face to be green but she didn't have any green makeup so she thought that black might be a good substitute. So she went off to the bathroom and came back with a dish of some concocted black stuff and put it on my face. I loved it because I thought I looked soooo scary. I got lots of attention and comments that night trick or treating. Later, when she went to wash it off my face it wouldn't come off even with the cold cream she tried to use. The next day I had to go to school with a GREY face. I was so embarrassed. This story is not about my worst costume, it is about my best. For some unknown reason I have always remembered that costume as my favorite.

Worst costume:
When I was really little my mum would dress me up like a pumpkin...
I'd wear this oversized orange apparatus and she would stuff it with pillows to make me a large pumpkin... I even had this little green leaf-shaped hat to top it off. Thank goodness there's no embarrassing photos of it or any evidence that I ever wore that.

Two best costumes and one of them was my worst also
1) I was a "punk rocker" with a black garbage bag as my dress, my hair punked out and the
dress was sprayed with different colors.

2) (this is the one I loved, but I got TEASED big time at school for it so it also made it the
worst) I was a bag of dog food. We made it the night before with a just emptied bag of
dog food we had and stapled shut at the top with just my head out of it...
and I wore my hair in pony tails with my face painted like a dog. We paraded around all
the class rooms (this is in 3rd grade) and when we got to the 5th and 6th grade classes
everyone told me I stank. (which I did, I am sure as I didn't even clean the bag out LOL)

You know when I was young (the memories flood in as I write) I didn't have one bad costume I can remember! I was lucky to get the best of the best, popular of the popular if you will.

The only thing really negative I can remember..having costumes rip (plastic things) and the masks being some what hot that they would get sweaty and wet lol.

Basically any 80's to 90's action cartoon super heros my brothers and I had the chance of dressing up as! I really believe the 80's was the best for Halloween costumes, haunts, haunted houses that were all around town in October and you would pay a fee to get in etc!

I remember when I was in my teens we all decided to "f" it and go out anyways we dressed up as hockey players LOL...put on our favorite jerseys and went out..the adults handing out candy were reluctant to give us candy (not all but it seemed a lot of them) but we ended up getting a lot anyways, that was fun.

I can't remember any of my costumes but I sure do remember the elastic breaking on the mask first thing in the morning and not being able to wear it all day

I remember, when I was young my mum (who has 2 sons) dressed me as a fairy !!!! I had the tights, think it was a ballet type skirt, wand and as far as I can remember the top half was pink.

Do you think she wanted a daughter ??? Anyway this year I'm dressing myself.

Worst:

Clown. Multiple years, because my mom hated halloween, wouldn't make something new, and it's what we had on hand.

That's why I hate clowns, not because they're 'spooky' or anything to me, but because I hated being one.

At my grade school as a kid we would vote within the class on the best costume then guess who is under each. My favorite was when I wore grass skirts on my head and waist to be Cousin IT. However, the only costume to win best costume and not be guessed as to who was wearing it was is when I wore my sisters Wicked Witch costume. No one in the class came close to thinking a 6th grade boy would wear a witches costume! (Yes, I was addicted 40yrs ago too.)
This topic also happens to be one of my most embarrassing moments.. as when I took off the costume I had tights & and a T-shirt on and you could see my tighty whiteys through the tights! Wouldn't of been so bad if I didn't sit in the front row.

After that last reply I am feeling sooo much better about my grey face

Best: A home-made cow costume. It was a full body cosutume with a separate head piece that had ears...also beneficial because I was the warmest kid out TOTing! It was complete with tail and spots. Only thing missing were udders...haha.

Worst: I don't really remember a worst, but the most boring was probably just a witch. That was when I was about 8 and stuck for ideas.
