I have searched the net over and over and still can not find much info on Mafia theme parties I ask my husband to help me come up with ideas for invite wording and design I got some ideas on here as using Tommy gun invites or black ties for the men and pearls in velvet for the ladies. Both ideas I love. I posted a mass email to our friends who normally come letting them know that this year will be mafia theme and dress will be more formal I have already had a cpl of ppl write back as though they are not pleased with the mobster theme I quote one said

"I would not miss ya'll's party for the world ....BUT MOBSTERS??"

I am not even sure how to reply to that .

Someone on here was also kind enough to include the link for gangster slang for me and even suggested I make a video invite using clips from mob movies I admire anyone wo is talented enough to make the video invites and would love to do so myself but i ma not the most computer savy.

I can't think of one dang thing to say in the invites that would go with our theme I am about ready to tell my husband to forget the whole thing

I like your theme. It would help them focus on costume ideas if you stressed the time period, the 1920s, more than the mobster aspect. Tell them think "The Great Gatsby", not Tony Soprano.

Here is a murder mystery game that a friend of ours did a couple of years ago. It may give you some more ideas. Good luck!

I would go with Pumpkinprincess's idea, i had the same though too of rewording it to that era rather than "mobster" .

Goto the library, do some research on the 20's & mobster area.
Would start with World Book encyclopedia. Take photocopies for reference of clothes, places, etc. That should help to lead you on the right direction. In the immortal words of Godfather... "Do it"! I did a quick search of Barnes & Nobel & they had 6 pages on Mobsters.

And make your reluctant friends more interested if you included "Dead" Mobsters as ghosts or Zombies, tieing back in more strongly with Halloween and Supernatural aspects of the holiday?
You could have some built in social aspects to this mixed grouping as the live mobsters become confronted by their past victims? Maybe a game is in this ?
Maybe some of your hesitant friends worry about their strictly mobster costumes not looking authentic enough or right? Add the monster make up and the incorrect clothes get auto matically overlooked?
Maybe this would make it Easy for them again?
So many adults are so hesitant and scared about possibly failing and looking stupid or wrong.

You could decorate your house like a Speakeasy. Just another idea.

Silent I feel so bad for you.......cause I just loved your idea. Of course ya gotta take into consideration that I'm a irishmen from the south side of Chicago. Don't let your guests upset you...ya know how these things go, someone is always going to have something to say.

Thing is be challenged by that and rise to the occasion, do your homework & find a way to make this party a lot of fun for them. Lets see.......how can I help get you started in the right direction.

ok a small story.......Several years ago my Aunt, her son & his wife went to a family wedding. I had wondered why they had not taken the grandson along. Well we all know about her ex's side of the family.

I told her she was full of it.......when she told me....I never been to a wedding like this......she said there were actual "HOODS" there. They frisked people at the front door of the hall & women had to open their purses to be inspected. They asked the men if they were carrying a gun or knife, it had to be checked at the door. I told her ...BullSh**!!

Two weeks later I talked to my cousins wife & she told me she was never so afraid at a wedding in her life. She said she was ready to go when they were frisking people & that was before they asked if they were carrying. Funny thing is....this was not young people they were checking out that much as the guys over 50!eeekkk!!!

Long live the bad boys of Chi-town!!

    Now get in the groove!!lol

Aww Silent, I feel for you I really do! People can be such party-poopers. I wouldn't let them get you down though - there are always a few wingers but I love your idea and I'm sure everyone will have an awesome time!

I did a little bit of searching and I found this thread about ideas for a 1920's mobster party, some of which I thought might be of some use to you: 1920's Party Help | Ask Metafilter

Yes Magickbean.......I think we should help Silent out...it can be very frustrating trying to plan a party & not be sure where to start. I called my Aunt in Chicago & told her of your dilemma. We use to work in the Waiters& Waitress Union in Chicago & been to more themed parties at Hotels than you can throw a stick at....seen a lot!

Playboy use to have a gangster party around New Years & she worked that every year. Have 2 concrete blocks with a pair of shoes & ropes & a sign that reads "swim with the fish!" Tommy guns on the wall & garters on the girls!

Now these are just suggestions to get your thoughts going!
Party Theme: Invite guests to the grand opening of a new speakeasy, have a name for your place....Cotton Club, The Duece. Set the atmosphere by playing Big Band music or hook your pc up to the 1920's radio network and Have that channel play in your casino. Have 2 guys at the door to frisk people when they arrive & your guests must have a password to get in.

Suggest costumes of zoot suits, black or white ties with black shirts, pin stripped suits, cops, politicians have spats, fedoras, gangster hats. Have carnations at the door so each male guests has one pinned on his suit. For the women suggest flapper dresses, evening gowns, showgirl outfits, the cigarette girl, have someone come as a MADAME for the brothel upstairs, have boas, pearl necklaces tiarias with feathers, headbands.

Actvities could include a murder mystery like someone getting killed & the cops come & raid the back room & its prohibition. If you have karaoke have someone perform singing an old
song. Check out movies like the Cotton Club...lots of ideas in that movie of life in the speakeasy, also get some ideas from the movie "Chicago" , use the soundtrack for music. The speakeasy's in Chicago were always know for their top of the line entertainment & beautiful chorus line girls.

In another room of the house set up a casino, you can rent gambling kits from party rental places, it has roulette & other games offer blackjack, give your guests chips to play. Get those cheap red/ white vests that the dealers wear & put garters on their shirt sleeves. Have someone to conduct the roulette wheel & such.

Prohibition was in full swing so make fake labels for your booze bottles. Stage a midnight raid by prohibition officers.

Night of Mystery.com, they have a message board in the site, go there & click on it & find the section that reads..."Murder of the juice joint".....it has entries of peoples parties & even tho these are murder mystery parties you will get some ideas on how to set up plus there is pictures!See if the below link works.

Also I typed in the search......roaring 20's party themes.......lots to look thru there!

    Hope this gets you started!
