Do not underestimate the effect of shadow and candlelight, the core of the halloween look.

No interior lights, just candles and lanterns. If fire is an issue, use LED candles. If you simply must have a light source, try to replace the bulb with green or blue. Have one really good jack-o-lantern inside for the guests to appreciate, something with a classic, leering face.

One of the simplest and most effective textures is ragged cheesecloth. Buy yards of it, 8-10 yards, and soak it in coffee. Rinse it thoroughly, dry it, cut long ragged sections, pull and tear at it to get it even more distressed and drape it on the back of furniture, doorways & windows, tables and mantles and stair rails, hang a tendril or two from the ceiling fan and pin triangular pieces into the corners of the ceiling. It creeps a place out far more than stretchy cobweb, and it's dirt cheap.

Get some black contact paper and cut out roaches, spiders and lizards to paste on the walls at random heights.

Finally, set the mood with atmospheric music, like Midnight Syndicate, Nox Arcana or Virgil, (google virgil ethermuse).

These basic steps were the core of our halloween parties years ago, and people raved that it felt like Halloween at our place like nowhere else. I take that as a sign it worked.

I just moved into a condo recently and was pondering the same thought, what to do. I have a bunch of things for the bathroom (towels, lotion pumps), dining room (table runner, table cloth, placemats) and kitchen (towels, food storage items, serve ware), but what to do for the general setting of it all. So I hope this helps you.

I'm thinking of getting almost sheer black fabric that would be safe to drape over lights, that way it dims them, but you can still see. I will be using the spider webs, although we have so many spiders by me for real, maybe I'll let them setup home inside for October LOL

I'm also thinking of covering furniture with sheets, too look all old and Haunted House like. I also have a balcony so will have some buckies out there with purple gothic lights. Not sure what else don't want to scare the neighbors too much the first year. I may use one of my foggers only on the day of though.

And like Spats said, music is key.

Yeah i already got halloween music downloaded more dance then scary. I also got plates and napkins for the party. I found this table cloth Drips of Blood Halloween Vinyl Tablecloth [FW9822 Drips of Blood Tablecloth] : Halloween Costumes for Adults, Teens and Kids, By Halloween31.com I might get that. Then i'm getting a cauldron since my party is witch themed. And i'm gonna order test tubes to use as shot glasses. I'm gonna do the cut outs that spats suggested. I'm alittle iffy on the lighting since i have all those stares i don't want anyone to fall. but i might change some bulbs to the blue lighting again like spats said. I thought about foggers but i wasnt sure if that would be safe in an apartment. Your luck you have a balcony i dont have that.

    Cool table cloth.

Since you're doing a witch theme, could you line the stairs with green lights or something like that. You could use stringed lights down the length of the stairs, that way it's still atmosphere lighting and you can see the stairs.

I've had lots of apartment parties. Everyone here has great ideas to help you!

Since I was always limited with space, I kept most of the decorations attached (or close to) the wall. Minus, candles and bowls, that is. To help give an overall eerie effect you could also buy inexpensive black sheer fabric and drape it like swags & panels around the windows. I've also used the fabric and just draped it along the walls. Really helps darken things up, but looks real snazzy! Like a sophicated vamps lair! Plus, you'll find that you can use the fabric over & over again. Walmart almost always has soemthing for $1-2 /yard.
