Soundsnap is the best platform to find and share free sound effects and loops- legally. It is a collection of original sounds made or recorded by its users, and not songs or sound FX found on commercial libraries or sample CD's.

It was originally started by a small group of sound people from all over the world. Our common belief is that sounds and samples should be free for everyone to use in their projects, commercial or not.

Our users are a diverse mix of sound designers, sound artists, web game developers, filmmakers and music producers. Hobbyists and home video makers are welcome too.

I haven't searched extensively, but the files I've listened to so far are really good.

Thanx for the site, found some good ones to run thru & mix for a newer MIB creature sound. Between the dinosaurs & big cats got a few good ones to tweak !

I found a HUGE collection of sound effects through my local library! Not only did they have a large selection of spooky SFX... but also hours and hours of other kinds of SFX.

In PA, we have both a state-wide and county-wide borrowing system. The complete catalog is online and the materials are delivered to my local library. Your local library might be small, but they might be able to order (for free) any item in the larger catalog.
