Several of my friends have suggested I set up a donation box or charge a small fee ($1) for my haunted house. Im just not comfortable doing that. I had a random thought about setting up something for CANDY donations. Like a trick or treat reversal lol Instead of me giving them candy they'd give ME candy. I could make a sign and a 'candy craving' monster for them to donate the candy to. I could save $50-$75 if I didnt do goody bags this yr. I dont know, Im just thinking out loud here.. What do ya'll think???

There's a thread about donation boxes here somewhere. Don't charge...you become a haunt then and there's a lot of things you need to do to keep yourself out of trouble. Ask the people with public haunts. A donation box does not create an issue, but its up to you as to what you're comfortable with. If you do a box, I'd add to the sign that donations would go for future improvements. Just place it where you can watch it so some kid doesn't run off with the donations.

Candy? I don't think I would be comfortable asking for candy. I'd put out a guest book and ask for comments and suggestions.

I woulden't ask for any shape or form of donation. After all we are the one's choosing to do a haunt/walk through and it's for the kids. I don't think taking a piece of candy from a little kid on Halloween is fun or good.

I don't see the point in charging. Pearent's take there children to get candy. If they come to a house where someone is going to charge to get in, the odd's are they'll skip it and go the next one. Also, most of the little kids I see trick or treating are very little (like two, three and four years of age.) I don't think they would quit get it.

Now if your asking donations for something very chartiable like The Childrens Hospital provide signs, info and be readdy to ask questions. That I have no problem doing. I was thinking about all the kids in the hospital that don't get to go out on Halloween, maybe it would be nice to give them somthing.
halloween is a super cool holiday.

You're right its a dumb idea... I didnt think it thru.. most of the TOT I get are older and several teens. I was thinking its halloween they are running around with tons of candy and it would be nice to donate some to the elder center around the corner. Thanks for your honest opinions

A donation box for money is fine, I made one that locks and I screw it to the fence.
But, I live in a low income area, and my total sum of donations the last 2 years is about $1.87, not counting the $10 the mother of one of my volunteers put in. This year I may not bother with it.

I know someone in Ottawa Ontario that asks people to donate non perishable food items for a worthy cause. They get a spot on TV and usually fill a whole tractor trailor with food to give to the needy.

That being said, if you wanted to do something like that next year (ask TOT'S parents for input) that would be a fabulous idea.

I always think of people giving $$$ means they'll feel free to give advice. Like my parents when I was younger. If Dad buys the sofa, he wants to come sit on it!

I've thought about that too. And just between us I know we would use it towards next year. But to get people to donate some thing that would actually make a difference next year probably won't happen. I know it would not in my town. I would not even bother. heck in my town its low income but every one drives around in expensive cars. That tells you what they spend their money on.
