After reading This post in the "what won't happen" thread, I'm kind of nervous now about turning my house into a church. So I am asking for your BRUTALLY HONEST OPINION in this matter. My plan was to have a steeple and stained glass windows on the house with a graveyard covering the front yard. I would hate to offend anyone in the neighborhood, and depending on the responses here, I can change it to a regular haunted house.
I have already finished the huge steeple, but it can be easily modified into a cool tombstone. There will be nothing gory or demonic in the haunt. Only a realistic old chapel and graveyard with a few corpses in the yard.
Looking forward to hearing your HONEST opinions. Thanks guys.

That's hard to say. There's a chance of noone being offended, but the south has a lot of hardcore christians; and if a few take a personal interest in you, Halloween could possibly be more stressful than fun. I'd ask some neighbors to see what they think about it.

When ironman had protesters outside of his haunt in owensburo he ended up with more free advertising and more patrons that year than any other year.

The thing is nowadays what doesnt offend someone? You cant please everyone. I know for a fact there are a lot of people that dont like gore i do and i use a lot of it and i mean A LOT! I have nothing against people that are against gore though. The thing is you want to make a church and graveyard you go right ahead and do it. Some might even say means things to you just smile and say im sorry you feel that way. One more thing its your property and you pay your taxes plus for every 1 person that doesnt like that there will be hundreds that do id say go for it!

Anything you do will offend SOMEONE.
I probably wouldn't do it, but you aren't me. Just don't go overboard and use an image of Jesus on anything...

I'd leave the crosses off the steeple and front doors, and go for it! Nothing is really creepy like an old run-down (I assume you're making your facade add-ons decrepit looking) church with a graveyard out front. You could really pull it up a notch with some spanish moss hanging from the trees and not cutting the grass for a while, too.

I think the more you make it look old and neglected would be better. Yes, do avoid the crosses...It's like waiving a red flag in front of a bull. I'd make some of those stained glass window look broken and add as much in the way of vines and moss to age it.
I'm in the bible belt and believe me...not too many people do anything here other than lights and pumpkins. So the area you live in will indicate the response you get.Spectorized

I'd say it depends on where you live. In my town it would get VERY unfavorable responses but we have a lot of those "it's the devil's holiday" people.
That said, I'm a Christian and it wouldn't offend me in the least. A church is just a building...Dear Sweet Leota, Beloved By All. In Regions Beyond Now But Having a Ball...

I agree that no matter what you do someone will get offended. Your idea sounds really awesome and unless you're doing something blatantly offensive (which you're not) I say go for it. If you're really concerned about it, and I'm in the bible belt and understand, leave off the crosses or any religion-specific icons.

Maybe change out the cross above the front door to a mortuary sign. Leave the steeple just take off the cross, maybe a weathervane instead.
I personally love the church idea but I also understand not wanting to offend or have a lot of hassle.
