I have tried to make all of my kids costumes through out the years, even when my oldest decided he HAD to be a carrot on year, but my youngest wants to be "IRON MAN" this year. With out a welder I am not sure how I would pull that off without buying it. I am hoping I can talk him into something else.

do you have a soldering iron?
all things considered, if he really wanted to be ironman with a metal suit, that would have had to have been started a while ago to get it just right. (i thought a lot about it, started making plans even.)
although you could use large soup cans and coffee tins(?)... tack then together and paint them... heck maybe he could just be the Mach I version Stark used to escape...

then again a foam muscle suit isn't so bad.

So would that be ominously funny music? I can't get my mind around that...

As far as making an Iron Man costume, go check out the fabric stores for the metallic fabrics or look at the heavier cloth/vinyl and experiment with the metallic spraypaint on them! That is all the really pricey IM costumes will be...

It CAN be done!

I forgot... I always used to make my costumes. I learned to sew in college in the theater productions, so I am weirdly suited to building costumes. Nothing wrong with buying them, but I do like the challenge of a from scratch costume!

You kiddin"???? I'm delighted to see ANYBODY in costume on Halloween! The more who share in the tradition--good costume, bad costume, I don't care--the better the night for everyone.

The idea is to HAVE FUN. If making a grrrreat costume is your thing, that's terrorific, and I really enjoy seeing the skill and creativity of the people who have the desire and the gift for it. But if you want to buy the Nut-and-Bolt costume for you and the missus or mister, that's peachy as well. Enjoy in freedom, I say.

I agree that the costumes in the stores are cheesy, ill fitting and poorly made. Those who have the time, talent and bucks will probably want to make their own version of a costume--some very elaborate and some more subtle. But I think that if one buys a costume off the rack in the store and puts it on and feels transformed into someone/thing they are not the other 364 days a year thats great too!

I like to see teenage TOTs come in costume, but if they are just wearing their street clothes and holding out their hands for candy, that's ok with me too. As long as they are respectful of me and my property, all are welcome to receive treats. I suspect that many of the teens are just out prowling around and happen onto my street when they notice from the corner that there are a couple decorated houses on this block.

i dont decide who gets candy, im usually too busy scaring or atleast entertaining people.
still makes me angry that some teens dont put forth a decent effort.

some store costumes can be modified to fit better, most cant, and some really are good but expensive, esp masks.
