Thinking of doing a haunted one this year for the teens at the party, it will be outside, do you use a map along with the clues? Otherwise how would they find anything in the dark (although they will have a flashlight per group) and on a farm? Any suggestions on how scavenger hunts work would be great. When I google it everything that comes up is to buy one, I already have an idea "what" just not undering standing the "how." Thanks!

You could hide your items and give them a set of riddles to break that will tell them where to go to find the item.

As a kid our scavenger hunts were always in neighborhoods where we went from door to door. Never tried an outside/no neighborhood one though.

I think I will have items to find in scary scenes set around the farm. So how could this work?

A poet I'm not but I'll give it a try. Say you hide something in a scarecrows sleeve or hand. The clue could go something like this.

Tall and lean, a head of straw, you'll find what you seek within it's claw.

Once you start rhyming, it gets easier.

Thanks Muffy, I've already found the thread and love the ideas, the rhyming, etc. isn't my question, it's how do you make it work on a farm? Do other scavenger hunts use a map when people are having to walk around in the dark with only flashlights?

Well we held our St.Patricks Day scavenger hunt when we were in Nebraska, so all the people that came to the party were our customers that had farms all over the surrounding area. In our hunt the first team to find everything on the list & complete the tasks at the diner were the 1st winners. Now in the town there was a population of 63 people so some of my gang went to the houses to get stuff. My list had all kinds of things bobbypins, safety pins, a can of green beans, there was probably 20 items, then when they returned to the diner there were 2 more things to accomplish......they were timed in putting a large piece puzzle together of the United States. The other thing was the group (we had 75 people in our scavenger hunt so we broke them down into groups) had to eat crackers & whistle & they were timed. So they stood next to each other & each person in the group was handed 6 crackers & they had to whistle as soon as they could after chewing all the crackers........I don't think we ever laughed so hard as watching them chow down on those crackers & having to whistle afterwards...it was hysterical. Again they were timed for this event too. So this is just some ideas for you. So we looked at how soon they returned & then we added the time from the puzzle & the cracker chewing.

If I had a farm I think the clues would be your best bet, just come up first with what they are gonna find, make a list of things & make up your clues from that. Give each of them a bag, a list, a map & a pen plus a flashlight if its in the dark. Hide stuff all over the place, your barn if you have one, out in the field hide some stuff, by your tractors, in your small garden, in the outhouse if ya have one, I'd hide toliet paper there, if your mailbox is a ways from the house put something in there. Sometimes its hard to have a map to follow cause then everybody is right on top of each other following each other. On my hunts we put the clues in different order so each group that got the list headed in a different direction. For instance you could put on their list...."Your hunt starts south of the house", "Your hunt starts in the barn". If my ex sister -in-law calls over the weekend I'm gonna ask her.......she has 2 large farms out in western Nebraska, I'll see what kind of ideas she might have.

At least your dealing with teenagers. We did a couple of scavenger hunts (with clues listed on a piece of paper and flashlights) BUT didn't think about my somewhat 'older' friends not having their reading glasses with them hahahaha

One thing to consider if your farm is large, state what the boundaries are before beginning. When we did ours, we told the guests that the items could be found inside a certain area (in our case, not further than the park).

    Good luck,

Our first year we did a scavanger hunt. We had alot of 3rd and 5th graders, and we just did the make a list and they found what they could, it kept them busy and we also gave them flashlights and told them about bounderies. It went well and them seemed to enjoy it. This year I plan on doing another one, but would like to go about it a different way....just haven't figured out how yet!

**Just an added tip**....we also have our party and hunts outside, but when its gets dark out, the kids have a hard time seeing each other espically when they are running around....so we gave all our kids Glo-Sticks , that they wore as necklaces and that helped them out alot. And it helped us parents keep track of where everyone was too.
