My ever reliable (at least 15 years old) boombox decided that it no longer likes CDs.

It was a Sony, and while it didn't have a a whole lot of bells and whistles, it had GREAT sound and really covered the bass for the Midnight Syndicate CDs we'd play for our graveyard.

I went and got a new Sony boombox that has the bells and whistles... and the sound sucks compared to my old one. I tested them by tuning them to the same radio station, and even with "bass boost" on the new one, the old one blew it out of the water and the new one sounds so tinny.

I just don't know what to do now. I think I'm going to let my Dh play with it and see if there is something I'm not doing right, but I think it's going back to the store.

How stupid would it be to run speaker cables from our main house sound system? DH has an awesome setup in our living room and I'm wondering if he could run around 50 feet of cable to our front window that faces the front yard so we could get decent sound.

Anyone got any recommendations on a replacement boombox that has decent sound - I don't need heavy bass, but it would be nice if it at least didn't sound like it was coming out of a tin can!

and on a related note, any recommendations for some speakers to go with a portable CD player so I can get some other audio in other parts of the yard? I'm figuring on them being amplified speakers, but if anyone has any suggestions for speakers that could work for this, I'd appreciate it!

You might be able to use some automobile speakers, I think they are called Sonic Tubes or Bass Tubes. They are made to increase the bass. I've seen them at Wally World and K Mart.

Sounds like the laser reader is out of alignment,it can be fixed at a shop,i've had the same happen & sent it in a few times & thats what happens with portable boomboxes.I never wanted to give it up due to the great sound & could never find another like it. I hate when they change things & models only to make it less than it's predesessor model. We use the boomboxes for seperate location/that schene music, but have the main house system with speakers run outside for the main attraction music effect. I had the same prob you do,they just don't seem to make good bass boomers boomboxes anymore,no matter what ya spend.Thats why i went to the house system with speakers run outside for the heavy bass needs.Just use larger diameter wire if you run distance. If you have a Biglots in your area, i've seen boom tubes for cheap. On the bright side better now than on the AM of the 31st when theres no time to run around.

This is one of the ones that I use, also a Sony.

Sony CFDG55 - Compact Design Digital AM/FM Stereo Boom Box w/ CD Player & Remote Control

It works pretty good and has a decent sound as long as it's not too loud. When I bought it I looked a bunch of different ones and the only ones I found that had real good bass where the bigger ones and just would not work well for what I needed. This one you can put just about anyplace you need it.

I may try to get my old one fixed, but thanks for the suggestions. (I'm not even sure where to take it! Guess I'm going to be researching that now too!)

I'm going to check out the Sony CFDG55 model and see if it's anywhere close to what I had.

I talked to my Dh about running really long cables up to the front of the house, and he says he'd do it if I can't find anything better.

I still plan on picking up some portable CD players to augment our ambient sound (witch laughter, crows, etc) in different parts of the yard.

check online in your area for a sales & service for sony. Mine was under warrenty at the time & i may take month to month & half for a turn around. The second time it went out,the cost was shy of a new one,but like you i could not find one that was at least the same in sound quality bass wise so i pay it.
    Good luck
