A while back, Terra (err Genexer at the time) posted a little pic that sparked my interest.
I'm a firm believer that imitation is the highest form of flattery, and so, this last weekend, we began my own take on the idea.
I only needed one side, and wanted the lower part of the pole showing, so a shortened piece of bulrap, we'll attach it right to the crossbeam instead of draping over, and cut to be tattered along the bottom edges.
Further, the burlap alone wasn't quite entirely right, so we covered it in latex to give it a more tanned hide look.
The stain I had, apparantly went WAY MORE "RED" in color after having sat in the garage for 2 years.
I decided to run with the red, and followed it up with some Mahogany and 'ebony' stains. The 'hide' now has a most horrid color...
I'm working on some designs for what insignia to print on it, and am thinking painting it in white will look best with how dark it ended up...
Bought some bamboo poles, stained in a similar red to hold it up. gotta core them out so they fit onto my rebar post to hold this up.

The hut is featured over here: Headhunter Hut.
VERY easy to make, and currently running in at $48, ($40 in grass table skirts, $8 for the umbrella frame, rest is scrap stuff we have around) but could be done for for about $33 if you only did 2 tiers of the grass skirts instead of the 3 tiers we did. (Joann's has grass table skirts on sale for under $5)

I have flying monkeys- and I'm not afraid to use them!

Wow, I feel like I've hit the big time now I've inspired someone else
instead of me being inspired.
Great idea using the latex over the burlap to give the feel of skin. Great improvement!

Neither can I....
Unfortunately, I'm having a very hard time with this. Got more than a dozen candidates right now, and none of us at home can agree on one. I'm hesitant to subject you all to my admittedly crappy sketches. (can't draw)
There's half a dozen of what amount to basically pumpkin faces. These have been with me a long time, I first made them when I was 8, and I typically try to get them into the haunt somewhere. Both my boys want differing versions of those. I'm open to this idea as 3 of these faces have become something akin to my signature.
My Aunt likes the idea of me using some Sioux symbols to spell out 'welcome to my world'. I'm a little concerned as such a statement is more or less sacreligious.
Got a skull design, a couple tribal knots, none of which feel 'right'.
And, in my mind, I keep seeing a handprint. You know, like on the cave paintings. Paint the hand and slap it on there, or place the hand on, then airbrush around. But, that alone is not enough, either.

We wound up compromising on a 'monsterish' handprint.
My wife really liked it, as did the kids. I was not so sure it looks right...because I can't draw...
Anyway. Progress being slowly made.
Kyle took a terrible pic of me next to it, I post only to give you scale.... I'm 6'1"
Cow skull on top (need a better way of attaching it, but it was getting dark) and lit with firelight.
