If you have random bones or a skull left over from other projects, chuck them on there with raffia or twine and maybe feathers tied on them. Lay these items out on mismatched dishes and bowls, especially wood or brass. Hit the thrift store for the cheapo dishes...

Look around at your local grocery stores for those tall pillar candles in colored glass jars. A few of those in different colors would be pretty and appropriate. Even better would be the glass jar candles with pictures of saints on them. If you have or can find a rubber snake or 2 or 3, wind them around the items on the altar.

Real voodoo practitioners, at least those in New Orleans that I've seen &/or met, wear white during ceremonies. White top/shirt over white skirt/pants, with a colored sash for a belt. Barefoot or sandals would be OK for footgear, and jewelry would likely be made of wood, real or simulated stones, or beads. Voodoo priestesses usually have their hair covered; women wear a turban-style headcovering. I don't know if priests cover their hair...

For veve patterns, watch Skeleton Key, or just wing it. Most veves start with a + shape and have (usually) symmetrical lines and curves crossing the lines of the +.

HTH! I'd love to do a voodoo theme someday. Can you tell?????
Oooo....do a google search for Voodoo, Hoodoo, Voudoun and Santeria. You'll probably find lots of inspiration that way. Also watch The Skeleton Key for some ideas.

We have done a voodoo bathroom in the past. This year it will be expanded to a live person as the witch and a larger room.
Here is a link to our pictures:

Music is critical as well.
I have another blog on our website about that and what music we used.

The little JuJu dolls down at the bottom of this page would make cool favors.

Maybe...a skull or two with candles on 'em.
A hand of glory is always spooky.
Various bottles and jars of herbs, etc, maybe a mortar and pestle.
Dusty old wine bottles, goblets.
Dusty old books.
Scrolls with spells on 'em (for sale).
Rings, beads, trinkets.
Little bags for protective magic, other talisman objects.

(Personally I like the hollywood approach, but to each their own!)

We had a few people last year that couldn't handle the voodoo bathroom last year. One guy, got in the door just fine, but he said he couldn't "do anything" once he was in there cuz he was freaked out. THAT made my night.

Chicken Feet. Somebody last year ( when I was a lurker) posted a thing about chicken feet and how to dry them. Went to my local supermarket and they said they could order them for me, but I waited too long and when I went to order they said it would take XXX amount of weeks to get them. that would have been past Halloween, so I did not get them.

Dried Chicken Feet with feathers....yeah, it is creepy voodooie stuff.

Dried Apple Shrunken Heads for Halloween

I'm making these to string about my Voodoo bathroom! Thought I would share. Very cheap alternative!

This made me laugh - and this I gotta do! I laughed because....how exactly did you approach the store and ask for chicken feet? Did you go to the meat department/deli?

Is there a special way you dry them and do you remember what that was?

I never cook whole chickens but I have a friend who does so I asked her to start keeping bones for me. She doesn't think I'm too crazy thankfully. I think I've actually talked her into being the voodoo witch this year.
