I've checked out several Lowes and Home Depots and none of them are carrying any foamcore sheets in thicknesses larger than 3/4".

I'm thinking it's because I live where there are no real winters (Houston, TX - home of the hellishly hot summers) so why stock a product that doesn't have much practical usage.

Has anyone else had difficulty with locating this stuff? Any place else I should look? I really don't relish having to glue together several thicknesses together for each tombstone.

I had the same experience when I lived in NC. I agree, I think it's the climate.

Amen, sistah. I'm in Richmond, and 3/4" is all I've ever seen too. I use 3M Spray 77 to glue my sheets together, and it works well enough, but it IS a drag having to mess with it...

I would think that badarse insulation would be useful here in keeping the bloody heat out but it would cost a LOT more. I would dearly love to have the 2" foam on the western side of my house! And in my cemetery

I live in South Georgia, it has nothing to do with climate, but local building customs.
Maybe you can ask them to order you some?

Insulation isn't just for keeping cold out. Builders that are cheap literally use foam in lieu of plywood sheathing on a home, only using plywood (compressed fiberboard usually) on corners.

Okay, first off I'm talking about the blue foam. Not sure if that is the preferred foam for tombstones. (Could someone please tell me if I bought the right kind - I bought two sheets of the 1 1/2" blue).

Here at KC, one Lowe's had it but the other didn't. The Lowe's that didn't have the 1 1/2 blue did have 2" white.

I used blue for tombstones, but it's very thin. I like the pink 2" for thickness, and doubling it up makes some nice realistic stones. Either works, and the blue is easier to store.

Years ago I made my tombstones by gluing the 3/4" blue insulation together and it is a pain, and you can see the the intersection of the glue joints when you distress the edges of the tombstone. I too would prefer a solid piece of foam.

    Hope this helps,

    Bentrod

Thanks Bentrod! That price for 2" foam per sheet is quite fair, given that a 3/4" sheet is $10ish or more... Just think how much gravestone-making time would be saved not having to mess with gluing up 3 sheets and then camoflaging the joins!

I don't need any new stones for this year, but I'll be darned if I'm not thinking about getting a sheet to hang onto for future use.
