So, how can I start this, from the beginning would seem best. My family has recently purchased a 150 year lunatic asylum and would like to have a profitable Halloween event. Space isn't an issue but budget is. Really can't talk in detail about what I am going to do but would like any and all suggestions on what I should do.
The Plan.
Make the event last 15+ minutes, charge $15. Use at least 6000 ft of room. 9 rooms (3 pneumatic, 4 static, 2 actor based scares) the rest a maze, with a few things outside to entertain people in line.
In the process of building my haunt now in a section that covers 2 floors.
What would you do with unlimited space, a small budget and a 200,000 sq ft of actual haunted building?

Not much. Set it up like a ghost investigation. Have stories for the rooms you're going to use. Have a story teller out front telling the stories as people are waiting to go in. Keep the rooms dark, and have lights trigger for each scare.

See, I'd love an event like maleficent suggests. What was that celebrity paranormal show on VH1, the one that used the same location more than once? Something like that.
The key is a great storyline! The biggest challenge, in any case, will be containing the paying guests to just the areas you want them in, so be prepared to spend some $ on padlocks, etc., to keep people out of the areas they shouldn't be in.

this might be my favorite picture. Notice the shadow on the 4th floor, that is in the original picture. I'm looking thru the pics I have. I'll upload and link them asap.
Think I should build walls inside? The problem being that its just HUGE. Thinking of using some of the largest rooms and dividing them with a maze of walls separating the props.
The powers that be (My father) decided to call the Halloween event the "Hospital of Horrors". So I've been planning rooms with that kind of theme.

may i recommend an airbrush artist - not for the whole of the site mind you - but it is a very quick way to put a theme into the background and create an atmosphere of your choosing.
this guy is a past professional acquaintance of mine - he specializes in blacklight art (see below). his work is solid, he has extensive experience with haunted houses/forests/events/etc, he is flexible as to what is painted (though his style is unique to itself) and he is definitely talented.
personally - the web pictures on his site don't do the man justice... when your in a room/maze with endless shapes melding continuously from one wall to the next - the feeling is daunting...
please check it out at Custom Airbrushing Artwork for the Entertainment Industry!. and frankly i think anyone reading this thread should take a look - just for the kick of it. it is rather difficult to explain.

That is a cool place. Such beautiful architecture.
I think a paranormal investigation is a great idea.
