I just saw the movie American Haunting. It's pretty good. So I really liked it but when everything tied together in the end...I have NO IDEA what happened. Can sombody please explain to me what happened???

The story had a twist ending.
They lead you to believe it was a paranormal event through out the movie. But, was it really was a cover to shield people from knowing that he was sexually abusing his daughter. Ok? When I saw it the first time on video it confused me also.

I have not seen the movie but wasn't it the retelling of the Bell Witch story?
If it was faked paranormal incidents (the real incidents from 1820's Tenn.) they must have been really talented to have fooled SO MANY people back then, people reguarded as the most intelligent and worldly, knowledgable of that time and place.
The Bell Witch performed infront of groups of these people and did things that nobody could have done then, some of the incidents couldn't be done now!
There has to be a certain amount of mystery in art, music, garbled lyrics, shaded images, all of which could possibly be seen as lies by some, but then it all is making our minds work trying to figure it out, so it can't be all bad.
There is a theory that John Bell was guilty of abusing his daughter and this was somehow the fuel for the supernatural entity to be so present. What or how the movie showed this, if they did seems to be a bit too much oblique for the audience, maybe?

The movie is loosely based on the Bell witch legend; however it deviates from the real story. I have family from the area who take this stuff a little too seriously, and they claim that the movie is really off. I can't really say, as I've never seen the movie. However, the Bell witch legend has been extensively researched and documented, so there is a lot better information out there if anyone is interested.

I have some of the bell with family in a cemetery not to far from my house. I know that the daughter is buried there. I use to have photos if her tombstone. i will have to check my photos on cd, for it, mad that they are not in my flickr account.

Yeah i got the whole abuse part. but the ending is just weird. thanks guys
