This will be my first year decoratiing and I want to use lanterns up the driveway. I figure about 4 on each side of the driveway spaced out evenly would be good and I would hang them on poles. Problem is they are expensive!!! I found some on Ebay for $16 that take batteries but who wants to deal with batteries that are also expensive!!! I found some others on some website I found through here but they where $40 each!!!! and took 110 power. Any help here??? THanks, Shane

    Downlow92,

Don't know where you're located or what the weather is like in your neck of USA around halloween but have you considered luminaries? Not just candles, but electric lights can be placed in white bags or empty crystal light containers. I made pyramid luminaries out of heavy card stock and electric lights. Cost all of $5.oo. In case of rain, I do have a few solar lights that are relatively inexpensive, I'll just slip a bag over those too and instant halloween mood lighting! If you like things fancy smancy then I guess you have to pay a little.

i use 2 lanterns in different parts of my haunt and they were both some what pricey
for one a used a small candle lantern and finished it to look old then converted it to electric with parts i had laying around total cost was the price of the lantern for about $7-10 plus the lamp parts, my second is a large red lantern from target's kids room section i think it was about $20

i would use a lantern here and there for accent lights but not as main lights, if you use multiple kinds of lighting i.e spots, floods, and accents and place them properly i think you would be amazed at how much light you get. if you are dead set on lanterns i say go with the battery if they are cheaper the battery should last awhile, or you can get some cheap candle lanterns and put the battery operated candles in them, wont give you much light, but again i usually see lanterns used for accent/mood

I just purchased four lanterns that burn candles at Big Lots for $5 each. I put in small 110 V sockets with flicker bulbs, etched the glass, and voila, instant old lantern!

Those are great looking lanterns, I'll have to check my Big Lots as well!

I agree, they'd look great along your walkway on hanging rods, perhaps with some shredded black/dark gray cheesecloth draped over them (that is if you're going to use batteries or electric operated lights).

I went to Lowe's on a tip from someone here and bought some solar lanterns on clearance. They had about 10 differnt styles ranging from $5 - $12. One that I got was the very last of that model - the display - so they discounted it even more for me!
