In the past...We've kept the walkthrough contained to a nice even path.

However, this year plans for them to "enter" walk all the way around the front yard, through a fence on the north, all the way around the back, UP 3 STAIRS and out the fence on the south.

This has me at a dillema.

We want those stairs WELL LIT to avoid any and all possible accidents, and make them obvious, yet do not want to detract from anything, either.

Some of the current ideas involve rope lighting (afraid it would just end up a tripping hazard) and gluing some of those battery operated tap light things to the wall right next to the stairs. They're not quite wide enough to slap some jack o lanterns on to make obvious it's a stair.

So, any good suggestions or experience with pointing out a 'watch your step' area without a big glowing sign reading 'watch your step'. (which is another idea)

How about outlining the stairs in glow-in-the-dark tape and hitting them with a blacklight? The blacklight shouldn't result in too much light pollution, and it will make the tape really pop. You could even mount the blacklights close to the ground so that the light will shine on the steps and not on the faces of TOTer's. That way the light will be confined to the stairs where you want it.

I was going to suggest trying to hook up some overhead green lighting for an eerie feel, but I say go with guitarist155's idea! maybe with the green lighting still, hehehe.

I picked up some gitd step strips for my camping trailer. They are even non-skid so you won't have to worry about someone slipping on a step.

If the stairs are in an out-of-the-way area where you don't want to run power, you could use super-bright LED's taped to watch batteries and attach them to the sides of the stairs or where ever you like. They say these "throwies" will last all day on one 30 cent battery. Here is another idea using the same lights. And at the very bottom of that page, there are lots of other ideas for these lights.
