I know that this is just shameless self promotion, but I just have to brag on my wife for the seriously awesome birthday cake she did for my mom this week. My mom is a theater nut and has been heavily involved in a local non-profit theater company for the past few years. They are just starting rehearsals for a production of Sweeney Todd and wasn't able to meet up with the rest of us on her birthday, so we surprised her at the theater with this:
Its an exact replica of the poster for the Broadway show Wicked, which is one of Mom's favorites. Of course, all of her goofy theater friends went nuts over it; it was a lot of fun to surprise her like that.
Anyway, I had to show this off to all of you guys because I think it turned out really well and I'm way proud of my wife. She's really getting into cake decorating and has done some really cool cakes. I think this is the one she's proudest of because of all the detail work with the different layers of fondant. Anyhow, I figured this was the perfect place to show off because I know how much you guys appreciate anything that celebrates the spooky.

You have every reason to be proud. That cake is sweet. Is that only fondant, or airbrushing on top of fondant? Please keep posting pics of her work, even if it's not "spooky".I grew up with a cake-decorating mother, so I would love to see all of her work.

Thanks for the compliments Rookie. There isn’t any airbrushing, its all layered fondant. I think the layers go as follows: the whole cake is covered in the green buttercream, then the black was applied as all one piece, followed by the white (the body is all one piece, but the letters are all individually cut out), then the flesh colored face and hands. The eye and lips are made with piping gel. She blew up a copy of the poster to the correct size and cut out a stencil for each color.
BTW, my favorite part is the witch cutout that dots the "i". Its kind of hard to see in this photo, but it is shaped like a witch on a broom and it cut out of black fondant to show the green buttercream underneath."No one lives any nearer than town. No one will come any nearer than that...in the night...in the dark."

I am an amateur cake decorator myself, and I must say that cake looks pretty dang good. I typically don't work with fondant, mostly buttercream. She did an awesome job - puts my work to shame. Beautiful coloring too. mmmmmmmm.... want...cake....now.......
