Once upon a time a long time ago, your Uncle Tor kicked around the idea of running a drive-in.
Eventually we gave up the plan..it would make money, but not ENOUGH money..and with Canadian weather, you would make the money ONLY for AT BEST 7 months. Anway, after the dream died, I was sitting around with one of the guys who dug the idea and we started to throw out the idea of triple bills that would have been fun to see...
Now mine was a DR JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE TRIPLE BILL. I didn't think it woud make a dime, but at the time, you could NOT see two of thee JEKYLL/HYDES that were best...now, thank to DVD two of the ones I wanted are on the same disc, and the third is very easy to track down...
DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1920) John Barrymore. (silent). I know, I know, you think silent movies are boring, but this honey is worth finding, and it's easy to track down now...Barrymore goes over the edge in this one and puts his whole body into smashing his victms, jumping up and down while he swings his club in scenes that are still pretty good. At one point Jekyll hallucinates that a giant spider the size of a shopping cart with Hydes head is climbing up his body. Plot parts of DORIAN GRAY are also stolen freely in it. Dig the plants you see around the set. They're from Barrymore's own apartment.
DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1931) This one was the hardest to find for YEARS...and lot of folks think it's the best of any. It didn't even make it to VIDEO until 1990...it's now available in the UNCENSORED 97 minute version with the next JEKYLL/HYDE that stars Spencer Tracy on the same disc. (A heck of a deal, by the way..)Fredric March got an Oscar, and it's one of the most intense horror films of the 30's..the camera is very active for it's time, and you get some real tension in this one...Parents beware..Hyde is mean enough in this one to cause nightmares in the young.
DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1941) The second Jekyll/Hyde on the same disc as the one above. Spencer Tracy on deck with Ingrid Bergman..not as good as Marchs' but worth the look...and very NEAT if you've only seen Bergman in nice girl roles like CASABLANCA...
