I appreciate your response Handy Haunter. Now, that's what I'm talking about! Your explanation is right in line with mine, but I take it a step further.
I think that Michael actually died outside the room from smoke inhilation and that his wife indeed went up to the room. Just as earlier in the movie Michael saw his deceased father, I think that his wife was now seeing her deceased husband. The room was showing her a phantom Michael, hence the creepy smile. On the recording at the end he is telling his daughter that she, he, and her mommy can be reunited or something to that affect, and the room is the only way.
At least that's what seems to make sense to me, but Jadewik has an interesting interpretation as well.
