So as some of you already know I almost bought Madame X's wedding dress. Great deal only I later realized that the dress could not be dyed. That wouldn't work for what I need. I am looking for a really cool wedding dress preferably with a long train that I could bussle. I also need to be able to dye it. Here in Florida it is hard to find the deals that all of you seem to be finding so if anyone out there has one or knows of where I could get one please let me know. If you could post a picture that would be even better. I am looking for CHEAP!
Let me know if you can help
Oh yeah and if would be really great if the size was anywhere between a 4 and a six, I can always take it in. nothing bigger than a 10 sometimes you lose the shape if you have to take it in too much.
I am looking for more than one.
I know someone out there can help me.
I actually have a question about dyeing a wedding dress, if their are pearls and beads on it, they don't take dye, do they?Spookilicious mama, on my thread about finding 99 cent bargins, you, and some other were talking about the price of wedding dresses. I thought I remembered there being one at this store, well, I went back today, and yup, they did, only it wasn't 99cents. It seems that on monday ALL the clothes are 79 CENTS!!!!!! Holy S##T! Can't get cheaper that that!!! It is satin, with lace accents, a train and big bow to bustle, Size 10. The only thing is there are pearls and a few irredecient sequins. There is some discoloration of material and lace, but if it is going to be dyed, that shouldn't be a problem. I don't have a picture yet, but could take one,but would need to get to my sons to post, I have dial up and it takes forever, besides, I am not good with that stuff. So if interested, PM me, other wise I will just hang on to it, just to have. I am going to have to check back to that store more often!! Why couldn't MadameX's dress be dyed?
Bethen please PM me or you can e-mail me. I am interested in the dress. Is it long sleeve.
Not sure why Madame X's dress couldn't be dyed. Maybe it was treated with something to keep it from discoloring and that is what keeps it from being able to be dyed. I need to talk to you some more. Please contact me
Hey guys I just wanted to share how great the dress came out. So I found one wedding dress that I thought would work. Brought it home and through it in the wash (had to it smelled old) it came out fine. Next I filled the tub with prepared RIT dye (Black that I had prepared first in a pot) filled the tub up swished it around and placed my dress in. Oh my gosh it looks great. The pieces that were lace took the dye great, the under satine sheet came out like a cement gray. It is exactly what I was hoping for. So i have this great old wedding dress that is loaded with three different shades from cement gray all the way to black on anything that is lace. Love it Love it Love it!!!
Bethene:
The peals did not take the dye, but it works. They just look dingy. If I want I can replace them out. There aren't too many. So if you want to do something similar it is best to get a dress with a lot of lace and no or few pearls.
Another quick note: I also bought three old table cloths. Some were lace and some were crotchet. Dyed them as well only I did those in the washing machine. They look awesome. Very old and dingy. Perfect for an eerie party. The table cloths I got each for about 3 bucks. One of them is huge will fit my table that seats 14. Great deal at a thrift store. In case anyone is interested this is a great cheap way to add a little creepiness to your table decor.
What a great idea spookilicios mama about the table cloths. I will have to go to my local thrift shop this week. =) Oh and how did you dye it in your washing machine?
13 mummy, When you buy the RIT dye there are directions on the inside of the box. One of them is for the washer machine. Just follow. Very easy. It will tell you to put in the prepared dye. The direction for that is also on the box. i think its like 2 cups of hot water and 1 cup of salt for every box used. For table cloths I used maybe 2 boxes and filled the Machine half way up. They came out like a cement color. Very cool. Good luck
Spook - I'm glad you found what you were looking for. Prices on Ebay started jumping on the mourning attire, so I just bought an old lacey wedding dress ($20.00 w/shipping), and I'm going to dye it black sometime this week. I'd love to see pictures of what you've done so far.
Hey Boo, as soon as I can get my husband to help me with posting pics I will try and get them up. I've never done that before so I hope I can. Great idea for mourning dress. I'm telling you I just love how mine came out. I'm going to use it as my costume (glamour ghoul) get a grey pearl choker and lots of long grey pearls a ghoulie crown and I am good to go. Remember to read the dye directions carefully and it may not come out exactly black depending on the material you are using. Good luck.
I'm so glad you're happy with how your dress turned out Spook. When I read your first post I was worried.
I'm not an expert or anything, but I have alot of experience dealing with fabrics. (ex-drycleaner). I just wanted to give other folks reading this thread a couple of heads-up.
Most wedding dress are a satin weave polyester. Polyester doesn't except dye very well, or hold it. So, when dying your dresses expect to achieve some sort of gray rather than black. If the dress has any cotton lace that will except the dye much better and will be darker.
Also, I'm curious as to how the dresses will hold their color when exposed to rain & such. The color may bleed some. It might not hurt to spray it with a water repel, although that might might the color bleed too. Hmmm.
Bethene - To my knowledge the cleaners do not apply anything to dresses to keep them from yellowing. I have been out of the biz for 13 years, so maybe it's changed but I doubt it. The dresses are simply wrapped in acid free paper and placed in an acid free box. Sometimes their sealed to be air & water tight, sometimes not.
