What themes have you done in the past? Lets start there, so we can suggest something other then those.

I've already started for this year myself....no real theme though. I started building a coffin (before the competition was announced) and I have a paper mache mask in progress, as well as several tombstones to paint up still. I'm trying to get a head start now, because once spring and summer get here, I see everything getting moved to the back burner as vacations and sports for the kids come into play.
I'm kinda in panic mode already because I have 2 6' tall skeletons I'd like to do something to, like corpsify, but I have never done that and I'm afraid if I start now, they won't be ready by Halloween. I also hope to get 4 columns and 36' of fence made too...
My only advice is...prioritize your projects. Maybe get your biggest ones out of the way first, and go from there. Get your theme established and what you'll need and start a little at a time. Why rule the living when you can control the dead.

Halloween is only 238 days away!!!!111ONE
"So much work, so little time." is quickly becoming my mantra.
Best thing you can do is come up with a plan and make a list. If you're REALLY concerned about time, all joking aside, start putting down deadlines/goals for completing each project. A plan of attack will help. I started with more of a shotgun approach and have found that I need to just take one project at a time, maybe have a backup project if 'm waiting on parts for something.

It seems only the forum members can appreciate how quickly the next few months will pass. I was talking to my hubby yesterday about my projects and he was like "I can't get excited over something that's so far away.... you've got plenty of time". Is he crazy? All the details take time (not to mention the layout and setup), and I haven't even started the big project yet. Yikes!

Booberrie, I know what you mean..... my husband is the same way. Every so often I can get him in a conversation that sparks so interest about halloween, otherwise he doesn't get it.
We started LAST Oct for this halloween !!! Seems crazy but, usually they (powers that be) don't tell us IF we were going to have a haunted house..... This time I decided to get is decided early !! So, here we are, meeting each month to work on projects, plan the next and general obsess about halloween !! SO much fun !!!
We were always so rushed that I could never really do much NEAT stuff ! Not this year, I'm going all out !

7 and 1/2 months is plenty of time... until you get all caught up in summer activities and then somehow you only have 4 weeks left. That's happened to me the last three years. I kept saying that I'd have plenty of time to build a new graveyard fence and then end up throwing something together at the last second. Last year, I took the dive and finally spent quality time (and $) on building a realistic looking iron fence. I got a good 40 ft or so built... the only problem is that I need another 90 ft for the front yard. I'll hopefully be working on that this summer... if I don't run out of time and $ (and storage space).

Anyhow, back to the original question... themes. So like Gothic asked, what have you done in the past? I love to come up with new ideas, but would hate to suggest repeats.

I have to add that I agree with Lynn and Booberrie... my wife is just like your husbands in the sense that she can't get excited about my projects and plans until October (or late Sept). I've stopped telling her them for the most part. When I've come up with or built something, I have to come here and post it because my friends and family would think I'm weird if I discussed this stuff with them 8 and 10 months prior to Halloween. I get very excited about new props I'm building and other people just don't get it. For me, preparing for Halloween is a season that lasts 364 days a year.
