need scary story for abandoned camp site

Hi all, on another thread started by gothic I decided to do a haunted trail with an abandoned camp site theme. Not my idea, just copying, anyway what I am looking for is a great story to tell or have read before people start the trail. I need some sort of story to explain what might have happened at the camp site. an urban legend if you will. Something that tells what may or may not have happeded. Something that explains why the site is abandoned and why no-one dare go in. Just a little something to set the mood. Any ideas? I'm sure some of you more creative people out there have something and if you wouldn't mind sharing that would be great.

Richard Hill lived in a cabin on top of the unnamed hill. He had lived alone for 40 years. Some said that Mr. Hill would never marry. On the night of October 20th, 1937 there came a knock on the door. Mr. Hill opened the door to find a weary female stranger needing directions to Oxford. Mr. Hill hated to send her off into the night at such a late hour. Exhausted from her efforts to hide from her stalker, she agreed for the protection of a stranger. Mr. Hill had never meet someone so fascinating and beautiful. Richard learned that the ladies name was Liberty James. She was from Pontotoc, MS and was running from the man that her parents had wanted her to marry. It was love at first site. It is said that in the middle of the night there came a knock at the door. It would be the last time Mr. Hill would answer the door. Some time passed, when 2 hikers came upon the old abandon cabin in the woods. There was a strange feeling in the air. Yet unable to stop themselves, the two hikers entered the cabin to find 2 dead bodies near the front door.

This is the story that I used last year for my haunt. My haunt was called Old Liberty Hill Haunted Adventure.

Great story Gothic princess, lets keep the scary stories coming. Now people at my job are getting into doing something at their house and they would like hear more scary stories for their haunts.

Ok got bored here at work (internet coming and going, So I put this story together real quick.. Here goes, enjoy. Hope it isn't tooo long...

A husband, wife and their 5 children decided to go camping in the woods of Holly Springs Forest. Unbeknown to them an escape convict has been living in the woods for the past three months. William Jones had been arrested 8 years ago for the disappearance and murder of 7 women in the neighboring community of Leak. It was reported that the women had died a horrible brutal death. William Jones was classified highly dangerous and a serial killer.

Steve and Jennifer Reed decided it would be best to get away from the city for a few days, take the kids camping in the woods, anything to get away from the news of the missing women. In three months 5 women has been reported missing from Lawrence County. Jennifer had been having severe nightmares about all the women. She feared something bad was going to happen to her. Steven suggested a camping trip to relax her, and the kids loved to camp.

Friday came and the family packed the van and set off for a 2 hour drive to Batesville, where Steven grew up. The Holly Springs forest was over a thousand acres, Steven grew up camping in those woods. Shortly before dark the family found the perfect spot to set up camp. The kids were having a great time finding firewood, while Jennifer unloaded the van. Steven was busy setting up the last tent for Paul his oldest son. Steven looked over at Jennifer and noticed that she looked relaxed, he felt good about suggesting this trip.

A scream pierced the air, Steven dropped the tent stakes and broke and ran towards the direction of the scream. His mind was racing, from the corner of his eye, he saw Jennifer get to the children first. Steven could not believe what his youngest son Sam had stumbled upon. Jennifer held Rachel in her arms as Steven took the human skull from her little hands and placed it on the ground. What the hell was a skull doing in the here in the National Forest? Jennifer and Steven looked at each other, fear cursing through their body. Jennifer was trying to calm the kids, while Steven’s mind was racing. Did someone get killed here, did an animal drag the skull from somewhere else. The best thing to do was leave the area and get back to camp where he and Jennifer could discuss what to do next. He was frightened that she would have more nightmares.

Once back at camp the children were full of questions. Steven and Jennifer walked away from the kids to discuss what needed to be done about the skull. Jennifer seemed calmed when Steven suggested they remain at camp and finish out their trip. He didn’t feel any immediate danger and once they left, he would contact the local authorities. Jennifer agreed with a worried look on her face.

Back at camp, Jennifer suggested the kids have a bonfire and roast Marshmallows, which took the kids mind off the discovery and a lot of questions they did not want to have to answer. Everything seemed to settle down around camp, shortly there after. Steven finished setting up camp while Jennifer helped get the kids cleaned up and ready for bed. Every once in awhile, something would catch his attention from the corner of his eye. He played it off on nerves, from the discovery of the skull. What the hell was he being so jumpy about? He needed a drink.

Finally all the kids were fast asleep; Steven and Jennifer were sitting by the fire drinking coffee. The moon was hidden behind the clouds, occasionally peaking out, very little light out, except for the fire. It had been a long time since the two of them were able to sit around and do nothing. There was nothing to worry about. The silence was very enjoyable and relaxing. A gentle breeze blowing from the East. Steven looked over and saw that Jennifer was peacefully resting, her eyes closed. He was glad he had suggested getting her away from town. Work had been horrible lately. Then he noticed something out of the corner of his eye. What the hell was that? A shadow, there was no sound. But something moved in the woods. His heart was beating fast. Was it an animal? He scanned the area, nothing was there. He looked back at Jennifer to see if she saw anything, she was still sleeping. Steven got up and walked towards where the shadow came from, only a few feet away from camp. Damn why was he freaking out? He had camped in these woods many times as a teenager. He knew these woods by the back of his hand. 36 years old and getting freaked out by shadows was not like him. Then something jumped out of the woods and hit Steven square in the face killing him instantly.

Jennifer had saw Steven walk away from camp. She wondered what had drawn his attention to walk around camp. She thought maybe he was bored and thought no more of it. Jennifer closed her eyes and fell back asleep. Then she awoke with a start, what was that noise? Was it one of the children or had Steven walked back? She glanced around; nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary. She turned to look behind her, and briefly saw a man before her head was clearly cut off at the neck.

The next morning 12 year old Peg awoke to find both her parents missing from camp. She was frightened and the other children wanted breakfast. Being a big girl and the oldest, she set about fixing breakfast for the younger ones. Not hungry herself she wondered around camp calling for mommy and daddy. This was not like them to leave without telling her where they were going. She had often watched the younger ones for a short time. She hurried everyone through eating and got the younger ones dressed. She decided the best thing to do, was to go search for them in case they were hurt. What she didn’t think about was 5 kids all under the age of 12 getting lost in the woods and never being able to find their way back to camp.

From the front page of the Town Eagle Newspaper….

7 more people missing, feared dead. Husband, wife and 5 children, went missing 4 days ago, relatives have no clue where they went camping, search results around the home have produced no results. Serial killer William Jones still reported as an escape convict. Thoughts are that he is in the area of the Holly Springs Forest.
