Okay, how come this thing didn't make 100 million?
It's the story of the hunt for the Zodiac killer in Frisco and was released a year ago tomorrow (March 02) here in Canada.
The viewpoint is from the cartoonist of the Chronicle, who with sheer dent of effort came the closest of anyone to solving the thing.
As a horror film it has a real creepy excitement to it, because you don't KNOW who is going to get out alive and who will die...the case is long gone from everyone's memory and when Paul Avery (played by Robert Downey) goes off ALONE to met someone who says they are the Zodiac killer, you realize what a DUMB idea it is, and you have NO idea if he is going to survive or not.
The murders are shown as realistically as possible, not tarted up like they have in the recent gore porno flicks..you see close up shots of someone getting stabbed with a knife in a park and it hits you like you're seeing steers being killed in some Kansas City slaughter house. That simple.
The cast is amazing. You have Brian Cox (the other Hannibal from MANHUNTER a couple of months back) indie queen Chloe Sevigny, and Robert Downey Jr.
By the way, take a good long look at the San Francisco Chronicle set. A buddy in the newspaper game was down there for a feature story about 'city in fear' during the case, and was amazed at how pefectly they recreated it...and it has to have been repainted and redone maybe half a dozen times in the decades since
By the way, dig how far technology has come...at one point someone admits they couldn't get info out because they didn't have one of those 'new fax machines'.
And wait until you meet the guy in the basement...the one who's handwritting was 'the closest we've ever seen to the Zodiac..."
    Very creepy.

Oh yes, I can vouch for this one too, this movie ROCKS. Jake Gyllenhaal is the cartoonist obssessed with the investigation, he's a wonderful actor as well. I had to own it after seeing it--very much worth anybody's time for a viewing.

    I really enjoyed this movie.
I think there were 2 reasons that it did not make as much money as you would think.
I don't think it was all that original. It was well done, well acted, suspenseful just not all that original.
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT - Don't read any further if you do not want to know how the movie ends.

The movie contains one fatal flaw for American audiences... It has no ending. I don't agree or disagree with this view. You could argue that it is just life and not everything gets wrapped up in a neat little bow.
