A few posts from the 'Fears' thread got me thinking about this...have any of y'all ever found yourselves at a spooky place or in a scary situation by way of taking a dare or from peer pressure that your friends gave you when your group was out looking for a little mischief?

One location immediately came to mind for me, a place some friends and I explored close to Halloween one year in high school, that is unofficially named "Hell"...it sits atop a hill in my town surrounded by one of the worst neighborhoods we have. Now it is gated, but back then we could get to it by moving a log and driving up a winding dirt road. Supposedly a site for devil worshipping and black magic rituals, there is a HUGE, old dilapidated barn at the end of the road. We could explore the place only by moonlight and flashlights, as there was no lighting. As far as I could tell, the barn housed only a bunch of old traffic lights and phone books, tires and things. But what REALLY creeped me out was the massive, circular concrete slab on the ground near the barn surrounded by trees and shrubs..in the center of the slab is a rusty ladder that descends about 20 ft. down into "Hell", which is some pitch black, hollowed out underground space (don't know how big because my flashlight wouldn't reach the corners looking down in there).....now my stupid friends actually went down the ladder to look around, but I stayed up top by myself--I was afraid that rickety ladder might come loose and we'd be trapped down there. Thank God no one came up on us that night!! I've chalked up the whole situation to adolescent stupidity. But I was very scared there (and my ex-boyfriend was the one that dared me into it..one of the multitude of reasons he's an ex. )

Anyway...now that I've talked your heads off.....anybody else have one?

sorry, but i go along with kallie, i have never been given a dare like that, and even if i had, i wouldn't do it. i've never even been in a cemetary after dark. i to am a whimp. you have a lot of guts laurie. i think you were very sensible to stay up top. just think, if something like the ladder did break, who would have known what happened to any of you. it just gives me shivers. good thread though. it will be interesting to hear of others experiences. on the other hand, i do like fright night, the craft, the lost boys, pumpkin head, and movies like that. but i don't like movies like halloween, nightmare on elm street, friday the 13th. someone told my daughter and i scream was a comedy, we rented it and watched it. we were to scared to move after the movie was over to even get up and turn the tv off. scary, just to scary.

Well at least I can claim a bit of sense for that night.

On another occasion, a group of about 10-15 of us drove up this mountain road that at the top ended in a turnaround, for a night of underage drinking (I know, I know--it was wrong). Anyway, today there are homes all along the road but back then it was a very isolated place. We got to the top and were hanging out, and all the while I was doing my perimeter checks (which is a definite habit). I spotted a flashlight in the woods and instantly quieted everyone to make them look. We looked for a bit, nothing. As they were telling me I was full of crap, we suddenly spot it again, this time a lot closer--and obviously by the up and down bobbing of the light, the person was running toward us....right out of the woods. I'm serious, there was NOTHING up there. We F-R-E-A-K-E-D. Never seen a group of people move so fast.

By the way, my sons are NEVER reading this. Can't let them have this ammo against me, I'd kill them if they tried these stunts. 'But we learned by watching you!'

okay, i forgot about this, it wasn't really a dare though. a friend of ours family farmed some land that had an empty house on it. they had some vandalism there and were trying to thwart off kids partying there. i had just gotten my license and my sister two years younger than i and our friend decided to go after dark and check their house out. it was a long winding driveway to the house and corn planted heavy on both sides of the driveway. we went in the house and everything looked fine. we went upstairs and then we heard rustling noise and some ghostly moaning coming from the attic. it scared the crap out of us. we ran from the house and i ran to the drivers side and jumped in. my sister was hot on my heels. she jumped in my side and crashed heads with me. our friend yelled drive as she jumped in the passenger side crunching me in the middle, and my sister pushed me over further, put the car in gear and backed down that winding driveway like a bat out of h---. muddled, we went back to our friends house and one of her older brothers and his friends were the only ones there. we told them about our experience, they right away laughing jumped in one of their cars and tore out of the driveway over there. they found a girl and guy there and they were using the house as a makeout point. they had seen us coming and hid and made noises just wanting to scare us away. afterwards, we asked my sister where she learned to drive like that, she didn't even remember driving.

My mom and two aunts dared my cousin who was terrifed of cemetarys to go in and walk to a certin tombstone. She had to walk across a bridge to get there. Anyways as my cousin was walking in my aunt snuck through another gate and hid in the dry ditch from wich my cousin walked across. As my cousin was walking back after completing her dare, my mom and aunt told her to hurry cause there were dead people rising from the bridge. My cousin diden't beilve them. So right before she got to the bridge to cross my other aunt and some other cousins started rising from the ditch. The whole thing was planned and it scared the wits out of my cousin.

When I was in high school, there was a place way out in the boonies that everyone called Grandma's House. It was an abandoned, half-finished house that was covered with graffiti and sat on the edge of a small, man-made lake. To get there, we had to drive down a long, unpaved, unlit road. The treetops overhead touched and made a canopy as you drove through. You also couldn't drive too fast simply because you didn't want to get a flat.

So there we were, a bunch of high schoolers crowded into someone's mom's car out doing something we weren't supposed to be doing. We got to the place and ran around a while, scaring each other, looking into the nasty lake. As it got darker and darker (and being idiot high school kids, none of us had flashlights), we realized we needed to go 'cause we had no idea where we were. To this day, I can't remember how we got there or how we got out. I couldn't find it if I tried. I just remember it took quite a long time to get there; it was possibly on the edge of the Everglades, but I'm not sure.

Another time (also in high school), a bunch of us ran around on the grounds of the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables during one of the periods when it was abandoned. We were trying to see the infamous light in the tower. We ran around the abandoned golf course for a while, but got bored and left.

We also tried to find a supposed "Satanic" church in Coconut Grove that a sister's friend's counsin's mother's aunt's daughter (one of those) swore was there. We never found it.

Great stories. I don't have any like that, but it reminds me of the Weird New Jersey book I read sometimes. Its full of local urban legend stories about the gates to hell and haunted places. If you've never read any of the Weird State Name books, they are fun to read.
