Kind of like asking someone to pick out the options on your new car. Go with what YOU like/want. Then you'll have some sense of personal satisfaction.
If it's so confusing, don't go with a theme (many of us don't) but rather generic/traditional Halloween favorites. Themes can limit you somewhat unless you really have the vision and means to follow through.

How about an evil spongemonkeys theme? I bet THAT hasn't been done yet!
"We love the BRAINS! Cuz they are good for us...."
ok, really though... Well, what's on your short list so far? Maybe that could help us make a suggestion or 2.

well, i personally love a victorian halloween theme. i'm more of an inside decorator, so you could use old pharmacy bottles, detailed candalabras and such. i don't know about outside, well maybe one of those things that they put a prisoners hands and neck in. like the way they would make the town criminals stand there in front of everyone. i think it starts with an m or something, does anyone know what i'm talking about? someone actually made one and posted it on here. i believe it was the user Noahbody. anyway, and of course i like a good noose in a tree with a nice graveyard below.

Halloweenking , why dont you browse other members web sites and see what you like of all of them , then pick a theme from what you like best , sometimes your theme will start from 1 prop alone that you love....and see what budget you have and what you can try and make yourself and go from there
depends on what you also like halloween or horror wise , if you like the haunted mansion disney style or friday the 13th style ....
or if your doing a bigger haunt you also can manage maybe to make diffrent themes (stations all over your haunt too) for example i do an haunted mansion theme (a bit disney like) and old world victorian era , so in that theme i managed to do a mad lab decor with frankenstein in the manor....
also think about what trick or treaters you have , if their tots or older crowd , thats important to if you want to attract people to your house ...

if i recall, you were wanting something directed towards kids. why not a fairy tale theme. the kids push the witch in the oven? naw, the witch is eating some nice fat juicy kids. jack and the giant. the giant has pushed jack from the beanstalk. the three pigs look real good on a spigot.

You can always do Charlie Brown and a pumpkin patch theme. The kids and parents really do love this one.
