If you are interested, I used Minwax mahogany, a dark cherry and a very dark oak. Be warned: these are very dark colors and will not give the illusion of a fresh skull.

I think I used redwood, walnut, and a dark oak for most my skulls.

I'ld SOAK the plaster skulls in water, and had the stain in spray bottles. Spray on a color or two and smear it around. It'ld get all blotchy.

Excellent job, UnOrthodOx...

I loved the trip through the impaled skulls, and your "Big Chief" costume was FABULOUS. I like the idea of the addition of the hut and the hanging corpsified skeletons. Very nice.

I used to have a recurring dream as a child about cannibals (too many Tarzan movies, I think). I find the whole scene delightfully creepy.

great look! with the size of your front yard, you can def put more stuff out there. I plan on doing my front yard the same way but instead of impaled skulls, i will use a bunch of chop off bloody heads. please make sure to show us your finish work when the time comes.

I actually have a scale model of a home made version of the Witchdoctor's revenge: http://www.mooncostumes.com/item/4432

It's been put on backburner as it's one of those things I need someone to dedicate to be IN there.

The other 2 kids will be getting that age soon...

Wow that looks great, creepy.
I use the medium Bucky's there a little cheaper, so you can get more.
Rip some the legs off, you could impale the Bucky through the mouth and have the pike come out the eye socket.
Guillotine. Axe mans stump. Stocks and ropes or chains.

OoOooh. I see now! The video was a good way to capture the full effect.... the drums in the video made me think of that scene in "The Ghost and the Darkness" (I know... same movie I mentioned previously) where, the night before the hunt, the natives sacrifice a bull and drink its blood... and they're all dancing 'round the fire to the drums.

I do like the idea of making people walk through the impaled skulls. That's very suave! ... and the ideas/suggestions others have listed reguarding the skeletons sound good. More bodies! Plus, the idea of making people walk beneath a corpse is neat. What'd be fun to do is set up a drip system that drips plain water from the suspended corpse... so it feels like the body is dripping blood!

I also noticed in the video that the curtains to the shack were very nice looking.... have you thought about making them a little tattered and blood stained?

Your Bocar's costume is pretty sweet too... my husband saw that clip and mentioned something about face paint that glows under black light....

Anyway, I'd love to see pics as you set up this year! Your setup and theme is pretty fly! =D

I dont know if anyone has mentioned it yet but maybe go the voodoo route with your shack. Maybe like Tia Dalma's from "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest". Lots of shrunken heads, jars hanging from the ceiling, etc, etc....

Yep, heading down that direction, and further seperating the little shack from the field of skulls, making 2 seperate areas that flow together well. My oldest is building his own hut to set out in the field of skulls out front, where he'll pass out the glow bracelets, and I'm working on the shrunken heads, jars, etc for the back with the candy drop.

My 6 yr old has even been collecting lots of various bugs with his little net to fill some of the jars with.
