The sun stays hidden behind the clouds as the cold winds steal the warmth from body and soul. We huddle in the glow of our televisions and computer screens. The Winter nights seem endless.
The lights have come down now. The songs of joy have ended. The time of darkness has begun.
The echo of screams have faded into memories and we close our eyes at night in the comfort of our warm, quiet homes. We no longer fear the dark corners. We no longer strain to hear the whispers of the night. How soon we forget. The shadows may not be as empty as we imagine.
It's face is hidden. The true self lies behind a mask of innocence, staring at us from out of the darkness. To most, it is long forgotten. We feel secure knowing that everything is packed away in boxes. Stashed into the basement or shoved into the attic. Out of sight, out of mind. Very few think to take a closer look into the shadows. Maybe deep down we don't want to remember. Perhaps we don't want to know. If we look, we just might find something waiting there on those winter nights. Waiting just beyond our vision, just out of reach...watching our every move.
I know Halloween is right there on the edge of the dark, waiting to return. Just because October is gone is no reason assume it is over. Don't drop your guard! Keep a watchful eye on those corners. Keep your ears open to the whispers. Halloween is looking for the right moment. When you don't expect it is the perfect time for the fear to return. Something just might step out of the darkness and then you will learn that it is too late. I know. Trust me, I know.
Halloween never ends...it waits.
