Anyone out there got a good means of making shrunken heads?

I remember as a child making "witch" heads out of apples. And that would be ok, but I'm wanting something just a bit bigger.

I've tried a couple of fruits, and squash in the dehydrator, but most just don't work, or won't dehydrate quick enough and end up rotting.

I've heard of coconuts being a possibility, but have failed at being able to find any instructions on it, and all the 'heads' I've seen online from coconuts fail to shrivel like I'ld like.

I've got my own little experiment with sculpting and covering it in latex going on in my garage now, and it's coming along, but I really like the organic feel of the shriveled apples if there is something equivalent but a bit larger.

    Anyone got suggestions?

Yes! There's MANY talented people here and I think everyone probably has some good suggestions.

Myself, I would say, sculpt it in clay; make a plaster mold of your sculpture; pour latex into the mold and make a hollow "skin" and let that dry and remove it...and there you'll have a shrunken head!
    "WHAT'S out there?"

"I don't know.......it was little and brown, and low to the ground!"

I've seen shrunken heads made out of beets (O.K. so it was on Martha Stewart). I wonder if you could find a really big beet and make it work?

    Madame,

Ack! My dear the truth is indeed frightening but nothing like the pure horror and dread if you mention you are a follower Satan’s daughter, Oprah! Just the mention of her name makes my rotten flesh quiver!

My method is paper mache...you make a model, create a mold and then build up layers and layers on it and then paint it..I use brown paper shopping bags and varnish them and add hair. Slightly mad can probably show you a pic..right now I'm running a bit behind and can't get my stuff to work to post...grrrr....
But it's an old family reciepe that dates back to the 20's before plastic was widely used..and looks really bitchen'
