Janaury is named after janus, the old two headed diety who could look forward and backward at the same time. So with that in mind, let's take a look at Two DIFFERENT Hannibals.
Now, of course, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS is the ultimate Lector with Anthony Hopkins in a role of a lifetime. But MANHUNTER was made YEARS before with ANOTHER guy playing Hannibal...Brian Cox.
The movie is RED DRAGON with a different title...YEAR OF THE DRAGON has bombed so bad just before that EVERYBODY tried to steer clear of the word in any movie for a while after that...But it's still RED DRAGON.
You get Wiliam Petersen who would later show up on CSI and Dennis Farina also along for the ride..and they are great in the cop roles..
Michael Mann directs and does a nice job with the atmosphere, but the big thing to watch here is Brian Cox as "Hannibal Lecktor" note the different spelling...no, I don't know why they did that... he does some things different with the role then Hopkins would later do, and that's not always a bad thing. You start getting into the same kind of headspace that fans of the different Draculas are in when they compare, say, Christopher Lee and Bela...
In the cases of the two Hannibals, it' kind of fun to see what the differences are and to comare the two...and MANHUNTER is available at bargin rates..both make a great double bill.

uncletor, what a gem of a flick to suggest!!
The atmosphere is fabulous, the acting good, the climactic scene enough to scare you out of your chair (if not your pants). And the soundtrack...let's just say I've never been able to hear "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" the same way again!!
Excellent recommendation...Hooch gives it two thumbs up!!!

Okay, so I indeed saw this movie last night, Blockbuster only had one copy but it was in. I definitely understand your "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" reference now, Mama Hooch.

It was a good movie, I appreciate your recommendation uncletor! I really enjoyed seeing William Petersen in a role as someone other than Grissom on CSI, and I thought he did an excellent job in lending more intensity and depth to the Will Graham character....as for Brian Cox as Hannibal, well...he was still creepy, especially using such casual body language and tone of voice while discussing horrific subject matter with Will, but I don't think he achieved nearly the same power, the same darkness, or the ability to invoke sheer terror in the audience, as Hopkins did--whew, that man was brilliant in the role.
!!!
Plus, in Manhunter, they had Lector in a small, sterile-looking, totally white cell..the whole presentation of him wasn't quite as intimidating as having him in a dark, leaky, basement-type confinement.
(And the parking deck attendant says, 'What's that?..Is a bird?...Is it a plane? No, it's a.....FLAMING WHEELCHAIR BARRELING STRAIGHT FOR ME!!!
)
Another two thumbs up here!
