In Feb. 2006, AliveNBuried started a great thread asking members to post legends and folklore from their areas. Since then we have had new members join, and maybe older members have also learned of new stories (I have). So I thought it would be fun to revisit this question. Any stories?

This one seems to be know by a lot of people. I just found it out last year and it still amazes me. It's the tale of The Vampire Grave. It's in Layffette Cemetary in Layfette, Colorado. Then theres the Dog Grave wich is on the Toll Road, and a few others. I live 20 miles within all of these. I think it's pretty cool. Just check out the link.

The Chamorros have lots of legends to be heard. Here's one of them:

The White Lady of Fonte' River

During the early Spanish colonial rule in the late 1600's on the island of Guam, there lived two newlyweds in the quiet hillside village of Maina. The couple, a Spanish officer and his Chamorro bride. Before marrying, the bride's husband was romantic, dashing and polite. But soon after their honeymoon, he became cruel and abusive. Every night the husband demanded fresh mountain stream water with his food and sent his wife to the small creek in the valley below to fetch his water. After a while, the woman actually began to enjoy her lonely walks and eventually it became a ritual that she looked forward to.

Her favorite time was during the full moon when the moon's reflection shimmered across the surface of the moving creek like dancing stars, with the gentle wind whistling through the jungle foliage.

Her husband soon began to notice that it took longer and longer for her return and became enraged. Then one stormy and rainy night on their first wedding anniversary and during a new moon, he sent his wife out into the cold and wet, blackest of nights. With no full moon to guide her way and the screaming wind, the woman could not see that the small and trickling stream had transformed into a raging flood. As she made her way near the river's edge with her clay vessel, the muddy embankment suddenly gave way, causing her to slip into the turbulent water. Her cries for help came unheeded as she succumbed to the rivers dark depths.

Today it is told that if one were to drive over the Maina bridge during a new moon and look into the blackness of night, they may see a ghostly sentinel standing at the river's edge wearing a long and white flowing dress dimilar to a bridal gown, silver hair like the moon and sad red eyes. This is especially true when a dangerous storm is fast approaching on the horizon. Today's local Chamorros refer to her as the "White Lady" who warns of impending danger.
As darkness falls, the path ahead becomes veiled in gloom. A jack-o-lantern shines through the night. It's horrible visage serves two fold. To keep wickedness at bay, and remind travelers their fate, if they wander off the path.

Oh here is another good one:

    The Legend of Taotaomona

The taotaomonas are the ghosts of the ancient people of Guam. The taotaomona may take the form of a person who is very big and strong. Some of the taotaomonas, being headless and having deformed bodies, are very ugly looking indeed.

There is one special taotaomona called Anufat. He is very ugly and has teeth six inches long. He also has a hole in each side of his head, with ferns stuffed in each hole. Whenever Guamanians walk through a cemetery, they always whistle because they don't wish to disturb Anufat. If they don't whistle, Anufat may become startled and cause great harm.

The taotaomonas of Guam live in the jungles and if you disturb the taotaomonas, they may pinch you, leaving red marks on your body, or they may cause you to become sick. The only cure for this sickness is to visit a witch. If you put the sleep from a dog's eye into your eyes, you can see the taotaomona. If you look into the steam of cooking rice, you can also see a taotaomona.

I have been to the Lafayette graveyard, but didn't know where to find the vampire grave. There was a grave decorated for Halloween though!

This Colorado graveyard is known for its ghost lights:

In my hometown, there was a really pretty but decaying 1800s antibellum-style mansion on a hill. It creeped out most everyone that drove by it (and it was right off of a highway).

I remember in grade school hearing about how it was haunted by some sort of woman, look out of the windows and could be heard playing her piano that was in the upstairs. Kids used to dare each other to go into the house and no one ever seemed to make it very far without chickening out that I ever heard of. I couldn't imagine that a piano would still be in there after 50 or more years standing vacant either.

In the 80s, the state took over the house, renovating it and making it a historical site and a rest center for the highway. I did the tour, and the house is really quite nifty, but the thing that amazed me was that there WAS a piano and it was transported to a museum near the old center of town during renovations.

http://www.everythingcreepy.com/Kentucky.html has a short story about it. It's called "Whitehaven" now.

But there are waaaaaay more than that as far as ghosts and legends around my area - I even lived in a 1888 Victorian home that was reported to be haunted. Never heard or saw a thing.
