Dear Black Community:
We get it! You were treated like crap for a long time. At least you weren't treated like the Jews. At least you aren't treated like the slaves in modern day Africa. Now is the time to step up and move forward in life and quit dwelling on the past.
Please ignore attempts from race warlords and the NAACP that seek to nurture and widen the racial divide, thus lining their own pockets. Think about it. The NAACP, AL Sharpton, Jesse Jackson et al have no purpose in life and no way of earning an income if blacks and whites get along.
Respectfully,
Whitey D. Mann

... that makes me wonder what people would do if they were celebrating their English heritage and it was an effigy of Guy Fawkes that they were planning on burning, instead of a Halloween decoration they'd belatedly removed.
Grrr.
People are seriously getting offended too easily these days... and over things that happened a life-time ago. Bleh! I always thought we were s'posed to learn from our past, not LIVE in it. Oh, well...
Thanks for posting. It was an interesting article. I enjoyed reading it-- especially when, over half-through, they finally mention that there were other Halloween decorations that were still up. Silly, silly people.

***Im prefacing this comment with the statement that when I refer to "black people", Im not talking about every single black individual. Im talking to the Al Sharpton's and the Jesse Jacksons...the ones who SAY that they are working towards equality when in reality they are causing a bigger divide among the races with the things that they stick their noses into!!!!****
UGH!!! Will people get over it....that guy is totally off-base. Im sorry that terrible terrible things happened to black people A LONG TIME AGO....but terrible things have happened to just about every race and/or heritage. Hell, Im Irish but during St. Patricks Day when people dress up as drunken leprechauns do you see me calling the Ancient Order of Hibernians saying that Im offended cause Irish folk are stereotyped as being drunken idiots...or when cartoons still portray the dumb cop as a Mick? NOOOOOOO!! because there's harm meant by it. And one thing that black people aren't wanting to admit is that black people aren't the only people who have ever been hung. I do believe that right there in Salem, was is 17 people, I believe 16 of which were WHITE, were hung during the Salem Witch Trials? I could be a little off on my numbers but I do know that those poor souls were HUNG and not burned at the stake!
Ok...I gotta jet for now...Ill get off my soap box now...some subjects just really irk the heck outta me though!!!

Well my haunted fiends I really didn’t want to post this thread just to dump on black people but to point out a broader problem that I have been watching slowly develop. Yes, there is no doubt about the injustice that my ancestors did to the Africans that they enslaved. I’m sorry that it happened but I cannot address wrongs that happened, let see hmmm…140 plus years ago! If these Halloween props mentioned in the newspaper article were mannequins of black men, specially the one mentioned in the article and with accompanying photo that was left up after Halloween, I too would be greatly offended. Look the point is I’m not making well is if it isn’t the blacks protesting a Halloween prop it’s the Baptist or some other fundamentalist religious group trying and in some cases succeeding in getting Halloween eradicated. For proof of that all you have to do is go to your local elementary school and see that now the holiday we celebrated at school, as Halloween, has become some silly thing called Fall Festival Day. So the lesson is all this beware, don’t think it can’t happened to you and you better think twice about that hangman prop if you don’t want brothers Al and Jesse knocking at your door while your trying to explain what Fall Festival is to your bewildered kids.

I don't think hanging dummies should be percieved as a tribute to lynchings, but as we can see, they are. Getting defensive about the matter may be less effective than creating dialogue about it, and I mean that for both those offended by it and those who wish to display the dummies.
Maybe I'm older than some here, but to me 1968 isn't "a long time ago", so it doesn't really come as a surprise that it would ruffle some feathers, right?

Having worked in an elementary school before moving to europe, I don't really agree with your statement. Halloween is called a 'fall festival' for the same reason that christmas is called 'winter holidays'...because not all the kids celebrate all the holidays we do and can feel left out. Schools need to be neutral and welcoming for kids from all backgrounds and beliefs. Imagine that you are 6 years old and your family doesn't celebrate halloween. You're sitting at school while everyone is putting on costumes and you aren't allowed to participate or you are removed from school that day because those activities are going on. How is that going to make you feel? Imagine being muslim or jewish in a school where 'christmas' is the theme at the end of december.
That being said, in Holland they are so politically UNCORRECT that its scary.
They celebrate St. Nick on december 5th. St Nick visits all the schools along with his 'black' helpers. His helpers...the black Pete's...are very mischievous, simple minded, clownish and always being corrected by the rich white guy. The dutch themselves don't have a problem with this or the black people who live here. Foreigners have the most problems with this.
The dutch justify this by claiming that the black Pete's are black because of going down the chimney and not because they are servants/slaves. So maybe changing history is a way to keep traditions that you enjoy.

You American peoples could be so crazy sometimes !

It's just an hanged scarecrow! Moreover it was during the Halloween period. It's only those guys who think it could be a symbol that have twisted minds. In which State does it took place?
